Offer Description

The thesis will be carried out in the Photosymbiosis team (photosymbiosis.com) of the Cellular and Plant Physiology laboratory (UMR 5168 - CNRS -CEA - Univ. Grenoble Alpes - INRAe) at the CEA in Grenoble. The team's projects aim to gain a better understanding of how unicellular photosymbiosis works by combining subcellular microscopy approaches (nanoSIMS, 3D electron microscopy). Locally, the project will be carried out in close collaboration with the IRIG institute: INAC platform (IRIG) and the Structural Biology Institute (IBS, Grenoble). This thesis is funded by a European ERC consolidator project (SymbiOCEAN) led by the Photosymbiosis team. Several interactions will take place with the Grenoble and EMBL imaging platforms, and with the project's local and international partners during meetings and field sampling.

The aim of the thesis project is to study the morphological plasticity of a marine microalga through evolution and biogeography, but also under different conditions such as symbiosis in a host cell. To do this, the project will include subcellular imaging techniques (3D electron microscopy) to visualise and quantify the cellular organisation of the microalga. The project will use subcellular imaging techniques (3D electron microscopy) to visualise and quantify the microalgae's cellular organisation (chloroplast, mitohondria), and will establish a link between morphological plasticity and physiology using different approaches in culture and photophysiology (photosynthesis, sugar production). The symbiotic microalgae will be collected at sea during sampling campaigns.
