Offer Description

The person recruited will be assigned to LASIRE, and more specifically to the PCE team, within the theme “Study of the origin, fate, speciation and impact of contaminants in natural systems (water, aerosols and sediments) using innovative observation tools”

Among volatile organic compounds (VOCs), biogenic VOCs (BVOCs) are massively emitted by vegetation, with monoterpenes accounting for about 14% of total estimated BVOC emissions. They undergo rapid gas-phase oxidation by OH radicals, O3, and nitrate radical (NO3), leading to the formation of oxygenated first-generation terpene oxidation products (FGTOPs) in high yields. These compounds are semi-volatile and are known to further transform into secondary organic aerosols (SOAs) or condense on existing surfaces. FGTOPs react with atmospheric oxidants in the gas phases and likely also in the condensed phases. Through their reactivity, FGTOPs can affect both air quality and climate change through the formation of ozone and SOA.
The objectives of this thesis project are: (i) to study the oxidation mechanisms of FGTOP-containing aerosols by ozone and OH radicals in order to understand the physicochemical transformation processes of particles during their transport in the atmosphere, (ii) to study the influence of relative humidity on the oxidation mechanisms and (iii) to understand the role of oxidation on the hygroscopic properties of particles.
