The post is based at a French-speaking institution. Candidates should have a good knowledge of French, or they should be ready to invest time to enrol in French classes after their arrival in Strasbourg.

The CNRS (National Centre for Scientific Research) is seeking two PhD students to join the European Birds of Passage (E-BoP) project, funded by a Starting Grant of the European Research Council (2022-2027), under the supervision of Professor Marco Rocca.

The E-BoP project investigates the legal framework for temporary labour migration in the European Union and to the European Union, and for labour and/or social rights of temporary labour migrants. A particular point of focus is the role of key concepts, such as “labour market” and “temporariness” in justifying the limitation of said rights, as well as the tension between the use of these concepts by the law and their empirical reality.

Please see the European Birds of Passage temporary website for more details: https://marcorocca.wordpress.com/e-bop/ .

Successful candidates will develop, write, and defend a doctoral thesis in accordance with current standards of legal and social sciences research. The thesis will focus on a topic related to the broader subject of the E-BoP project, to be further specified by the applicant in their Research Proposal. Potential areas of interest for the project include (but are not limited to):
- The relationship of temporary labour migrants with the labour market of the state of arrival
- Temporary labour migration under international trade agreements
- Protectionism and social rights
- The integration of temporary labour migrants into the social security system of the state of arrival
- Social rights of seasonal workers under national schemes for temporary labour migration

In addition to the preparation of their doctoral thesis, successful candidates will support the scientific activities of the E-BoP project. They will also engage in other research activities leading to publications and/or communications in connection with E-BoP main topic.
