Offer Description
The proposed PhD thesis topic relies on the use of in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to explore the dynamic processes underlying the formation (and degradation) of monolayer nanomaterials. These nanomaterials are based on two-dimensional transition metals (2D TMs or metallenes) and their oxidized counterparts (also known as 2D TMOs or metallene oxides). The objective is to study them at the atomic scale and to observe in real-time the evolution of their structure and properties using various characterization techniques available in an electron microscope. The study relies on the use of high-resolution, double-corrected scanning and imaging transmission electron microscopy equipment from the regional platform 'MACLE'. The novelty of the project lies in the use of electron microscopy both as a means of structuring (electron beam interaction with precursors adsorbed on the surface of a graphene plane) and as an in situ atomic-scale characterization method, allowing the study of the physical mechanisms involved in the growth and degradation of these materials.
