Offer Description
The thesis will be carried out at ICMPE (Thiais, 94). However, the student will be required to travel to various project partners (Lyon, Grenoble, Marseille).
ICMPE is a research center for chemistry and materials science (https://www.icmpe.cnrs.fr ) covering a wide range of research fields, from design to preparation and optimization of materials for potential industrial applications. ICMPE carries out in-depth, multi-scale studies of new materials for structural and functional applications, mainly in the fields of transportation and energy. ICMPE has extensive experience in both aspects of the thesis: alloy design using the Calphad method (within the MC group) and alloy synthesis and characterization (within the CAM group).
The thesis topic is: Computational design and synthesis of alloys for concentrated solar energy storage.
By 2050, it is estimated that concentrated solar power plants could supply 11% of the world's electricity. Metallic alloys are excellent candidates for latent heat storage of this fast-developing intermittent energy. As part of a PEPR Diadem project dedicated to accelerating the development of new materials, we are seeking to model and design new metallic liquids for various applications, in general, and capable of serving as latent heat storage, in particular.
The thesis has two parts:
- an alloy design part using numerical tools
- an experimental part, during which the digitally designed alloys will be synthesized and characterized before being sent to the other project partners for more specific characterizations.
Numerical design will be carried out using the Calphad method and multi-criteria optimization algorithms to be programmed in Python. Thermo-Calc software and commercial databases will be used. Composition optimization work will be based on criteria such as melting temperature, absence of solidification interval, heat stored on heating and melting, density, etc. This work could be carried out in conjunction with the work of another project partner using artificial intelligence for the same purpose.
After numerical optimization of compositions, alloys will be synthesized using the laboratory's synthesis resources (arc furnaces, high-frequency induction furnaces). Their characteristics will be compared with predictions using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, electron microprobe and differential thermal analysis. Other properties (latent heat, reactivity with containers) may be measured in collaboration with other project partners.
Required profile :
- Master's degree in metallurgy or materials science
- programming skills (Python)
- interest in materials science, crystallography, phase diagrams, metallurgy, thermodynamics and/or modeling
