Offer Description

The PhD project is part of CONTRABASS a European Doctorate Network (Marie Skłodowska Curie Actions), focused on the fundamental physico-chemical processes governing the carbonation of recycled concrete and cement paste, as well as the subsequent formation of calcium carbonate binders to to support the effective implementation of CO2 sequestration and valorisation technologies.

The proposed PhD project is focused on the carbonation of the main cement hydrate, that is calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) which is also responsible for the material’s cohesion. The carbonation of C-S-H as well as the speciation of the CaO-SiO2-H2CO3-H20 system will be studied with a hierarchical multi-scale simulation approach including Ab-inito MD, classical MD and MC and kinetic MC calculations.
