Postdoctoral Researcher Position in Timber Engineering

Job description

The Department of Civil Engineering at the Aalto University is seeking to hire postdoctoral researcher in the area of timber engineering. Candidates in the early stage of their career (doctoral degree completed within the past two years) are preferred. Applications from Doctoral Students completing their studies during summer 2020 are welcome as well.

The successful candidate will perform research on numerical modelling of timber and engineered wood products. The research activities of the candidate should support and/or complement the current research topics of the research group of Wooden Structures (see the details below).

The research group provides strong support and academic freedom with possibilities for interdisciplinary collaboration, both internationally and within Aalto University. Teaching duties of the position are about 10% of working hours and are related to Master’s program. Opportunities for pedagogical studies are available. Possibilities for instructing Master’s Theses and advising Doctoral Dissertations are given.

Research Group

The postdoctoral position is located in the group for Wooden Structures at the Department of Civil Engineering. The group for Wooden Structures is a newly established research group. Main research areas are structural reliability in timber engineering, timber grading, further development of engineered wood products & structural solutions and assessment of wooden structures. Requirements

Applicants must have completed a doctoral degree in a related field (applications completing their studies during summer 2020 will also be considered) and show a publication record in top/leading journals. Fluent English, both written and spoken, is prerequisite. Programming experience with e.g. Matlab is preferable. Strong background in at least two of the following areas is required:

-        FE modelling

-        Structural mechanics

-        Timber engineering

-        Structural reliability

-        Structural engineering

Contract and salary

The postdoctoral position is contract-based; one-year contract is granted first, followed by possible extensions of another one-year period depending on the achievements during the first contractual period.

Aalto University follows the salary system of Finnish universities. Applicants may also provide salary requirements. In addition to the salary, the contract includes occupational health care benefits, and Finland has a comprehensive social security system.
