PhD Candidate in Physics of Acoustic Cavitation

Updated: over 2 years ago
Job Type: FullTime
Deadline: 26 Sep 2021

The School of Science is one of the six schools of Aalto University.Through our internationally-acclaimed high-level research we aim to make a significant impact on society.

The Department of Neuroscience and Biomedical Engineering is looking for

PhD Candidate in Physics of Acoustic Cavitation

Acoustic cavitation is broadly used in industrial and medical applications since sound provides a route to influence the micro-bubble oscillations. With e.g. ultrasound, one can actuate a micro-bubble, converting the bubble to a micron-scale tool, which has led to the development of a large variety of applications in different length scales.

We are looking for a PhD Candidate to work in the field of acoustic cavitation in ultrasonic frequencies. The specific research topic has a high level of novelty and while the project is basic research, we foresee a large number of applications in a large number of fields including medical devices, microactuators and drug delivery.

Your background and expertise

The ideal candidate has a MSc degree in physics, but an applicable degree in acoustics or engineering may apply. You should have strong skills in physics and mathematics, excellent merits in your studies and demonstrated skills in theoretical and/or experimental work during your MSc thesis. While not mandatory, a bonus is to have knowledge in one or more of the following areas: acoustic cavitation, acoustic streaming, Bjaerknes forces and cavitation-induced shock waves. If you have not graduated yet, you should obtain your MSc degree by the end of 2021.

You communicate clearly and have excellent interpersonal skills. You can work both independently and as a part of the team. You demonstrate a high level of enthusiasm and commitment to academic research.

What we offer

You will work along with 10-15 other researchers from Medical Ultrasonics Laboratory (MEDUSA) (main site of your research) Aalto University and from collaborator laboratories at Aalto University and University College London. MEDUSA's research is currently funded by Academy of Finland, Business Finland and EU.

The salary level is fixed to departmental levels based on career stage starting from approx. 2500 €. The time to complete the PhD is four years, once accepted to the doctoral programme. Funding can be provided up to four years from the beginning of your agreement.
