Junior researchers (doctoral students) in physics (# of pos: 2)

Updated: about 2 months ago
Job Type: FullTime
Deadline: 24 May 2021

The Department of Physics at LUT School of Engineering Science is looking for two junior researchers (doctoral students) to conduct doctoral studies and research at the Lappeenranta campus.

The department specializes in solid-state physics and detector technology. Research themes include e.g. electronic structure calculations based on Density Functional Theory (DFT), theoretical spectroscopy with photons and positrons, new material discovery and design, detector R&D for experimental particle physics, medical imaging, safety and security applications and magnetic properties of materials.

The junior researchers will join the following research groups with the following overall research topics:

1. Research group on Experimental Material Physics led by Professor Kari Ullakko: the activities in the group are focused on research and development of magnetic shape memory (MSM) alloys, their processing and applications. The junior researcher is expected to contribute to these research topics and to carry out experimental research on advanced laser-based manufacturing processes for realization of functional MSM devices.

2.   Research group on Experimental Particle Physics Instrumentation, group led by Professor Panja Luukka. The research focuses on detector systems for particle tracking and timing in the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC accelerator, imaging detectors for medical physics, and detectors for nuclear safety and security applications. The junior researcher is expected to contribute to these research topics and to the experimental responsibilities in the CMS experiment.

The potential applicant must have a higher university degree (M.Sc. or equivalent) in a relevant field (e.g. physics), and good communications skills in English. The applicant is expected to complete the doctoral work within the normative duration for the degree (4 years), prepare together with his/her supervisor a postgraduate study and research plan and obtain the doctoral study right within a year from starting at LUT University.

The employment relationship will start with a one-year term, which can be extended for another three years provided that the studies have progressed as expected.

Please fill out the online application form and attach the following documents:

  • Your CV
  • A motivation letter
  • A copy of your academic degree certificate and transcript of records. If the original documents are not in English, Finnish or Swedish, each document must be accompanied by an official certified translation into English or Finnish.

The work will start with a six-month trial period in August 2021 or as agreed with the employer. The salary is determined by the salary system of Finnish universities.

The closing date for applications is 24 May 2021 (at midnight, Finnish local time, UTC +3). Please send your application together with the required attachments through the university's online application system.

For more information, please contact the professor of the research group by email (firstname.lastname@lut.fi ).
