The Doctoral School of Industry Innovations (DSII) at Tampere University (TAU) explores research questions that are directly relevant for industry and business. Tampere University hires a Doctoral Researcher to complete a four-year, company-sponsored dissertation project under the joint supervision of a university professor and a company representative.

The purpose of the job is to create new knowledge for academia and industry in the field of tribology and machine elements focusing on fretting induced friction, wear and cracking. A number of research questions from the following list will be pursued depending on the student's background:
- What fundamental features are related to the evolution of the fretting induced friction, wear and cracking?
- How to develop and apply the advanced on-line measurement methods to determine the evolution of friction, wear and cracking in fretting contact in microscopic level?
- What are the test materials microscopic structural changes as well as nature of cracks and wear debris products induced by fretting?
- How to implement the localized contact spot induced features to finite element based numerical fretting model for predicting contact service life?
As a Doctoral Researcher you will conduct the research based on the selected goals mentioned above by collaborating with the industrial partner and the research team. The research topic is related to the frictional joints of combustion engine. Student has also possibility to industrial job rotation, for example, by having one month research visit to Wärtsilä Finland Oy, Vaasa. The results will be disseminated in scientific peer-reviewed journals, international conferences, doctoral network events and events with industry.
At the university, the work will be supervised by Professor Arto Lehtovaara. You will also be supported by practitioners in the steering group, including company representatives.
The tasks of all Doctoral Researchers will also include teaching duties that amount to approximately 5% of their annual working hours, unless there are justified reasons to the contrary.
You need to have an applicable higher university degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science or a related discipline in science or engineering. You also need to have an enquiring mind, enjoy problem-solving and be able to think independently while also being able to work in a team. A good command of English, both in writing and in oral presentations, is required.

What we offer
The position will be filled for a fixed-term period of four (4) years, commencing in January 2020 or as soon after that as possible. A trial period of six (6) months applies to all our new employees.
The salary will be based on both the job requirements and the employee’s personal performance in accordance with the salary system of Finnish universities. According to the criteria applied to teaching and research staff, the position of a Doctoral Researcher is placed on level 2 – 4 of the job requirements scale. A typical starting salary for Doctoral Researchers is approximately 2350 – 2450 EUR/month.

Tribology and Machine Elements group at the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences is led by Prof. Arto Lehtovaara and is part of the Materials Science and Environmental Engineering Unit. Our research group concentrates on dry and lubricated tribological contacts (friction, wear and lubrication), which gives basis for performance and service life of machine elements as well as monitoring and diagnostics of machine systems. Research is focusing on components of mechanical power transmissions, such as frictional joints (fretting), gears and bearings. Advanced design of tribological contacts improve energy efficiency, power density and reliability of machine elements and systems.
