Deadline: 30 Sep 2021

Tampere University and Tampere University of Applied Sciences create a unique environment for multidisciplinary, inspirational and high-impact research and education. Our universities community has its competitive edges in technology, health and society. www.tuni.fi/en

The research group of Electromechanics  at the unit of Electrical Engineering at the Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences  focuses on numerical electromagnetics and magnetic materials. We work at the interface of electromagnetic theory, computational science, physics of magnetic materials and electrical engineering applications of practical importance. Our vision is to integrate advanced electromagnetic modeling tools together with practical design of electromagnetic energy conversion devices, such as electrical machines, transformers, inductors and energy harvesters.

The research group of Innovative Hydraulics and Automation  as a part of the unit of Automation Technology and Mechanical Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences is doing interdisciplinary research in the field of fluid power automation, by the bridging of theory and practice with cooperation with industry. Our vision is to integrate novel system and automation solutions together with companies to real life.

The groups of Electromechanics and Innovative Hydraulics and Automation are currently participating a Business Finland -funded project which combines scientific expertise on power systems, power electronics, battery systems, software engineering, electrified vehicles, mobile machines, automation, and business model innovations to enhance the development of electrified working machines. The project is conducted in close collaboration with the Finnish working machine industry. Our part is related to the development of accurate but computationally efficient modeling tools for thermal management and design of working machine drivetrains.

Job description

We are looking for a Doctoral Researcher to work on modeling and design of electro-hydraulic working machine drivetrains. The work includes the development of power-loss models for the powertrain components (electrical machines, power electronic converters, diesel engine, hydraulics) and coupling these models together for thermal simulation of the heat-transfer process in the whole drivetrain. The modeling is supported by laboratory measurements on a full-size electrohydraulic loader as well as knowledge and expertise provided by the industrial partners.

The interdisciplinary topic provides a possibility to gain unique expertise on the operation and design of electric and electro-hydraulic drivetrains for real applications.

Requirements

Successful candidates hold a M.Sc. in electrical or mechanical engineering and are enthusiastic to venture outside their field to master the whole electromagnetic-mechanical-hydraulic-thermal power transfer process in the working machine powertrain. They possess the relevant theoretical skills and can demonstrate previous experience in simulation of some of the components required in the powertrain.

In addition, the following is appreciated:

  • Courses already taken both from electrical and mechanical engineering fields
  • Experience with MATLAB and Simulink
  • Experience with finite element modeling of electrical machines or fluid dynamics simulations
  • Experience with control of electric drives
  • Experience with conducting experiments and building data acquisition systems

Please be prepared to provide proof of your merits when requested.

Tampere University is a unique, multidisciplinary and boldly forward-looking, evolving community. Our values are openness, diversity, responsibility, courage, critical thinking, erudition bildung, and learner-centredness. We hope that you can embrace these values and promote them in your work.

The salary will be based on both the job demands and the employee's personal performance in accordance with the University Salary System . A typical starting salary for Doctoral Researcher is about 2490 EUR per month and it will increase during the studies depending on the progress (up to max. 3400 EUR per month).

We offer a wide range of staff benefits, such as occupational health care, flexible working hours, excellent sports facilities on campus and several restaurants and cafés on campus with staff discounts. Please read more about working at Tampere University .

We are inviting you to be a part of a vibrant, active and truly international research community. Interdisciplinarity is highly encouraged, as it allows you to expand your research network and exposes you to new perspectives and ideas to solve complex research problems and pursue novel research findings. We have a strong commitment to the highest level of scientific research and the provision of high-quality doctoral education.

How to apply

Please submit your application through our online recruitment system. The closing date for applications is September 30, 2021 (at 23:59 EEST / UTC +3). Applications and all accompanying documentation should be written in English, and in PDF format. Please note that applicants may be invited to participate to an interview throughout the application time and therefore we encourage to apply as soon as possible.

Applications should include the following documents:
