Doctoral Candidates in Semiconductor Technology: High performance semiconductor devices

You will be working in the Electron Physics Group (EPG)  where you have an opportunity to participate in world-class research in modern micro- and nanofabrication environment. Indeed, modern semiconductor devices have revolutionized multiple technologies including electronics, photovoltaics and telecommunication. This is largely due to achievements and scientific breakthroughs made in academic research. Now you have an opportunity to contribute to this cutting-edge research by becoming part of a research team that develops materials,processes and device concepts of the future. More specifically, your tasks would include e.g. design and fabrication of high-performance semiconductor devices such as photodetectors and solar cells, their electrical and optical characterization as well as simulations. The exact content of the work will be tailored based on the applicant’s own skills and interests. Our target is that you will acquire the doctoral degree in four years.

The EPG group was established in 2007 and has since produced more than 200 scientific papers on semiconductor materials and devices including top journals such as Nature Nanotechnology, Nature Photonics, Physical Review Letters and Energy and Environmental Science. Many of our results have already been commercialized through patents and intense collaboration with national and international semiconductor industry. The EPG belongs to OtaNano  that hosts an impressive 2600-m2  Micronova  cleanroom with state-of-the-art equipment for modern semiconductor fabrication and characterization. Requirements

  • Master’s degree in physics, electrical engineering, material science or equivalent on a topic of relevance
  • Good command of English
  • Strong drive towards excellence in science and technology at the highest international level
  • Hands-on experience in silicon or germanium wafer processing and/or characterization is beneficial

Salary and contract terms

The expected starting salary for a doctoral candidate is approximately 2500€/month and salary will increase with responsibilities and performance over time. The contract includes occupational health benefits and Finland has a comprehensive social security system. The annual total workload of research and teaching staff at Aalto University is 1612 hours. The positions will be located at the Aalto University Otaniemi Campus. We seek to fill these positions by the end October 2020 but later starting dates are negotiable.
