The School of Chemical Engineering is one of the six schools of Aalto University. It combines natural sciences and engineering in a unique way.
The Department of Chemistry and Materials Science is looking for
Doctoral Candidate to work on superhydrophobic cell-repellent surfaces
You will work on developing superhydrophobic surfaces on which cells (and possibly other biofluids) do not adhere. Your work during your doctoral studies will contribute toward improving medical diagnostics and single cell analysis and ultimately lead toward better healthcare.
Your task will include fabrication of micro- and nanoscale superhydrophobic surfaces and devices, their physical and chemical characterization (e.g. SEM, goniometry) and performing cell adhesion studies.
Your background and expertise
If you have passion to become a scientist working in an interdisciplinary topic combining micro-and nanoscience to biomedical and biomaterials science, you could be the person we are looking for. You have a Master’s degree, and your previous studies have preferably included at least some topics in micro- and nanosciences and/or biomedical and biomaterials science. Any past experience on microfabrication or cell culture (whether from work experience or from a course) is considered a plus (but is not mandatory for applying).
If you are chosen for this position, you will apply the study right for doctoral studies in Aalto University School of Chemical Engineering. Thus, please check the student information and admission criteria https://www.aalto.fi/en/study-options/aalto-doctoral-programme-in-chemical-engineering . In particular, please pay attention to mandatory skill level in English.
What we offer
We offer you an inspiring scientific environment. You will also have an opportunity to be involved in collaboration between several groups in University of Helsinki (Faculties of Medicine and Pharmacy) in order to develop the medical applications in single cell transcriptomics and spheroid growth for drug testing.
The expected starting salary for a doctoral candidate is approximately 2500€/month and salary will increase with responsibilities and performance over time. The contract includes occupational health benefits and Finland has a comprehensive social security system.
We prefer you to start in this position during Fall of 2021 (earliest 1.9.2021), but the date can be negotiated.
