Master’s thesis position within smart buildings

Updated: about 1 month ago

The research group of Smart Building Technologies and Services at the Aalto University School of Electrical Engineering is looking for a master’s thesis candidate related to smart building spaces which we call hyper-local service platforms. The position is for Aalto University students.

Certain types of neighborhood services are moving closer to consumers and their main competitive advantage is convenience. These hyper-local services promise their customers that they will save them time, that they can reach them without a car and that they might bump into their neighbours while doing so. Reducing the need or a car means that the customers can potentially reduce their environmental impact and get more exercise. These services are even more relevant now that knowledge workers are spending more time in their home neighbourhood as a result of increased remote working due to Covid-19.

These services are enabled by smart technology. They often require online payment and reservation systems, smart locks and security cameras. Typical examples of these kinds of services are:

-          24/7 grocery stores; two different companies have opened these kinds of store in Helsinki in summer 2020
-          Pop up neighbourhood bike maintenance
-          New apartment buildings with concierge services that offer to walk your dog and fill your fridge with groceries
-          Renting of everyday products like sowing machines from libraries and companies
-          Hybrid home delivery concepts such as picking up Prisma online orders from ABC petrol stations

The research should understand these new kinds of services and uncover the drivers behind why these companies have chosen the new model over the traditional approach.
