Aalto University School of Engineering, Department of Built Environment invites open applications
Doctoral Students in Traffic control for environmentally friendly future mobility
The Spatial Planning and Transportation Engineering research group is seeking a highly motivated and creative doctoral student who would undertake research in the area of Road Traffic Control, with special emphasis on reduction of traffic emissions in the context of future electrified and automated traffic. The doctoral student will join a multidisciplinary research project and conduct research on developing novel traffic estimation and control strategies, at local and/or network level, accounting for the emissions produced by traffic, considering the, possibly new, inputs (and outputs) that future traffic systems, composed of AI-optimised automated and electric vehicles, may have. The research will have a strong modelling and simulation component, where novel AI-based models and tools may play a fundamental role.
The position should start in early 2022 and is intended for full-time work. The selected individuals will work under supervision of Assistant Professor Claudio Roncoli. The successful applicant will have possibility to cooperate with world-class researchers, as well as to attend scientific conferences and meetings. Moreover, the research group provides strong support and academic freedom, with possibilities for interdisciplinary collaboration, both internationally and within Aalto University.
Research areas, requirements, and expectations
The doctoral students are expected to conduct research in one or more of the following areas:
- Road traffic modelling, estimation, and control
- AI-based modelling and data-driven control applied to future traffic systems
- Decentralised and coordinated multi-objective system optimisation applied to future traffic systems
A prospective student is expected to fulfill the following requirements:
- Timely completion of a Master’s degree in one of the following (or related) fields: Transportation Engineering, Electrical/Communications Engineering, Computer Science, Operations Research/Systems Engineering, or Statistics/Mathematics/Physics.
- Knowledge of quantitative methods used in engineering, with special emphasis on data-driven methods, and skills in applying such methods to solve engineering problems
- Good programming skills
- Ability to work in a team
- Willingness to learn
- Very good English proficiency
The applicant is expected to:
- Publish in top journals and scientific conferences
- Participate in research proposal preparation
- Guide master's students
- If applicable, teach in the master’s program
Duration, financing, and salary
The doctoral studies at Aalto University take approximately 4 years. The doctoral degree is granted after writing a relatively short summary doctoral thesis (which is typically based on the student’s publications) and public defense.
