Doctoral student position in Reliability of electronics in industrial applications in co-operation with ABB Drives

Job description

Electronics Integration and Reliability group at Aalto University together with ABB Drives (https://new.abb.com/drives/ ) is looking for a doctoral candidate to work on physics of failure (PoF) of frequency converters; including PCBA circuits, control electronics and materials. The focus is on ALT/ORT testing, component level root cause failure analysis supported by FEM and multi-physics simulations, statistical data harvesting and analysis as well as lifetime model development for the most relevant failure modes. Furthermore, this doctoral thesis will assess reliability of advanced power semiconductor modules which are currently undergoing significant changes in terms of materials and designs. The use of wide-bandgap and other emerging platforms require higher temperature and current density capable interconnections in combination with complex topologies that enable significant heat dissipation improvements. These changes combined with more demanding environmental conditions generate new type of reliability issues that this research work will investigate. The research will be mainly carried out within facilities located at Aalto University, however, activities within ABB laboratories are also included.

This thesis project offers the possibility to build a high level and tailored competence related to electronics of AC drives together with experts from Aalto University and ABB. This position provides the opportunity to simultaneously complete your PhD in an academic and industrial environment, to nurture the desire to dig deep into the fundamental behavior and structure of semiconductor and other electronics components.

The position is available immediately. The position is fixed-term and filled initially for 1 year with an option for extension until the end of 4-year PhD studies. The salary is determined according to the salary system of Aalto University.  Employment includes occupational health and social security benefits.

Your background

A candidate should have a M.Sc. or equivalent degree (or be a M.Sc. student in a final phase of his/her studies) in electrical engineering, with an interest in power electronics, material science, electronics manufacturing processes, semiconductor component physics & manufacturing and experience in failure analysis techniques. The candidate should also have strong analytical and writing skills, and experience or genuine interest on AC drive products / frequency converters. Expertise in laboratory testing and especially on component level reliability testing, practice in MATLAB and LabVIEW and basic knowledge on data science, AI/machine learning methods are valued. Fluency in English both written and spoken is a requirement.

How to apply

To apply, submit the documents indicated below using the on-line recruitment system link ‘Apply’, by January 15th, 2022. Application materials should be submitted in a single pdf file and in English (max 5MB). Your application should include the following attachments: motivation letter, CV, a copy of study records, and names and contact details of 2 references.

Aalto University’s employees and visitors please note: you should apply for the position via our internal system Workday -> Career -> find jobs (not external aalto.fi webpage on open positions) by using your existing Workday user account.
