The Centre for Wireless Communications (CWC) is one of the leading research institutes globally in the area of wireless communications. CWC conducts world-class research, training top-notch graduates, creating high-grade technology and supporting best-in-field industry. The centre, operating at the University of Oulu, Finland, consists of two research units: CWC Radio Technologies and CWC Networks & Systems.
We are looking for an enthusiastic doctoral student to join our research team working on optical wireless communications. The job will be carried out at our institution as a part of the Greenedge Project, an European International Training Network initiative. The project offers a four-year fully paid doctoral position. The work to be done will be focused on developing a novel concept called light-based internet of things (LIoT), where IoT nodes exploit light to harvest energy and to establish wireless connectivity. Printed electronics technology will be used to implement the nodes. The research work includes the development, implementation and characterization of low-power optical transceivers, energy harvesting units, communication protocols and other functionalities needed to develop the LIoT concept. We have a well-established research team working optical wireless communications, including different applications of Visible Light Communications.

ESR Project Description: The project aims at developing Light-based IoT (LIoT), creating energy autonomous nodes that can communicate with light (and also radio, if required). Nodes are connected to the Internet as soon as they are exposed to light, i.e., exploiting the “expose and connect” paradigm. Novel LIoT concept to be developed, implemented and characterized. The use of printed electronics will be considered in the implementation. The objectives of ESR10 are: (1) to develop LIoT, or “expose and connect-concept”. (2) Feasibility: Use printed electronics technologies to implement a demonstrator of the concept; (3) To characterize the communications and ML performance and (4) To create a practical application dealing with source data sensing, edge processing and transmission.

(3) Optimization of the splitting between computation at node and network.
Required, Preferred and Desired Prerequisites/Skills
- At the time of recruitment, the applicant must not have lived in [Countryhosting-the-ESR] for more than 12 months in the previous 36 months (3 years).
- No more than 4 years spent in research/work activities after the achievement of the MS degree.
- A Master’s degree in Telecommunications, Computer Science, Data Science or equivalent (granted no later than the appointment date).
- Solid background in wireless communications
- Good knowledge of electronics (analog and digital)
- Experience in designing and implementing circuitry
- Previous experience implementing and testing systems
- Open-mindedness, strong integration skills and team spirit.
- Very good communication skills in oral and written English
- Knowledge on optoelectronics and optics is highly appreciated
- Basic knowledge of signal processing
- Highly motivated to design, hands-on implementation and testing novel ideas and concepts.
Rules for applicants
Early-Stage Rule: applicants should be, at the time of recruitment by the host institution, in the first four years (full-time equivalent) of their research careers and have not yet been awarded a doctoral degree. This is measured from the date when they obtained the degree, which would formally entitle them to embark on a doctorate.
Mobility Rule: at the time of recruitment, the applicant must not have lived in the country where the position is offered for more than 12 months in the previous 36 months.
PhD Rule: once selected by the GREENEDGE consortium for the ESR positions, the applicants must apply for the PhD program at the respective recruiting sites.
Priority List: applicants can select up to 3 Individual projects. The hiring process will take into account the priority specified by the applicant.

The Living Allowance amount is €3110,36 per month (basic gross salary, before taxation and compulsory deductions for contributions to social insurance schemes according to national law).

Supervision and Mobility Program
Once hired, the candidate will:
- work at Centre for Wireless Communications, University of Oulu, Finland, performing full-time research under the supervision of Prof. Marcos Katz
- be enrolled in the PhD program at University of Oulu
- will additionally pursue two secondments at KUL and WSE, for a respective duration of five and five months
