We are looking for a motivated doctoral candidate to join the Department of Accounting at Aalto School of Business for carrying out research focused on management control's Digitalization and its ethical implications!

The Ph.D. Project

As a Ph.D. candidate, you will work as part of an international research team focusing on research addressing how organizations configure their management control systems (MCS) in response to Digitalization to achieve sustainable performance. Within this broad objective, you can freely define your thesis topic and access survey data for quantitative analysis and case organizations for qualitative research approaches. Prof. David Derichs and Prof. Teemu Malmi will form your supervision team, guiding your academic journey.

The Ph.D. Program

The Ph.D. Program in Accounting at Aalto School of Business offers interdisciplinary and international training focusing on developing your analytical skills in conducting business/accounting research. It provides you with in-depth knowledge of current accounting research and research methodologies to enable you to contribute to scientific knowledge from an international perspective. In practice, we also hone your abilities and skills to publish research in high-quality academic journals. To help achieve this goal, you will work closely with accounting faculty, will partake in national and international courses, and will attend international conferences for networking and presentation purposes.

The Ph.D. Location

Aalto BIZ is one of the top business schools in Europe. The Department of Accounting is the leading accounting department in the Nordics. At the department, you will be part of a diverse research community and work together with an international group of Ph.D. candidates and faculty (check out our website !) Furthermore, the department is closely connected to leading Finnish and international organizations, allowing you to build a broad network for research and practice. Finally, yet importantly, your teaching-load will be limited to supporting one course a year (10% of your annual work time) with the possibility to teach more for extra compensation.

The suitable candidate has an excellent master's degree (MSc, MBA, MA) or its equivalent. Excellent English language skills are expected. Good analytical skills are a requirement. Due to the project's international and collaborative nature, you should be an outgoing individual, interested in actively building your professional network.

The candidate must take a GMAT or GRE General Test as a necessary part of the application.


The duration of the full-time studies is 4 years.


During the first and second year of studies, full-time doctoral students who make satisfactory progress in their studies and research are guaranteed an after-tax salary of approximately €25 000, based on a combination of 50% employment contract and 50% personal grants. After two years, funding is competitive but is assured for candidates making satisfactory progress. The department will support your applications in every respect possible. The employment contract provides candidates with occupational health care, paid annual leave, a pension contribution, a computer/phone, and working space.
