Doctoral Candidate in the area of Materials Science for Lithium-ion Batteries Recycling

We are looking for a highly motivated PhD candidate to join a multidisciplinary initiative at the forefront of the circular economy of raw materials. In this research position at the SmartCycling project, you will be developing new ways to analyze the characteristics of battery materials to help with the design of more efficient recycling processes following the principles of the circular economy. In the SmartCycling project, you will work closely with collaborators in the field of machine learning and artificial intelligence to find new approaches to process design.

Your background and expertise

We are looking for an independent and highly motivated individual with a Master’s degree in Materials Science, Process Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Recycling Engineering or similar fields. The ideal candidate would have knowledge of recycling processes and an understanding of the correlation between the intrinsic properties of materials and their recycling potential.

Excellence in scientific writing and publishing is expected, and good command of English is a necessary prerequisite. Knowledge of HSC-Sim® and other process simulation software is considered an asset.

What we offer

The research group of Mineral Processing and Recycling at Aalto University is one of the only groups working on the engineering fundamentals of the circular economy. Our multidisciplinary research projects have strong collaboration with experts in industry and academia around the world. This is a unique opportunity to carry out impactful scientific research towards the sustainable processing of materials.

The contract is initially made for one year, with possibility of extension. The total duration of doctoral studies is four years. The starting salary will be based on the salary system of Finnish Universities, increasing with responsibility and performance over time. The contract includes occupational health care benefits. The starting date is negotiable, but is estimated to be in beginning of January, 2022.

The annual total workload of research and teaching staff at Aalto University is 1612 hours. Department of Chemical and Metallurgical Engineering   is located at Aalto University Otaniemi campus in Espoo, Finland.
