University of Tartu, Tartu Observatory (Estonia) invites applications for a PhD position in high-energy astrophysics.
We are looking for a highly motivated individual interested in studying the broad phenomenology and physical underpinnings of some of the most luminous transient events in the Universe. The successful candidate will work with Dr. Indrek Vurm on theoretical and numerical modeling of radiative mechanisms in different types of astrophysical explosions, in particular the new classes of events discovered in the past 1-2 decades like superluminous supernovae and fast blue optical transients. The candidates are expected to have a background in astrophysics and basic programming skills (Python, Fortran and/or C++). Prior experience with astronomical research, particularly relating to high-energy astrophysics, radiative transfer and/or numerical computations will confer an advantage in evaluation.
The application deadline is April 19, 2024. Applications should contain the following: a cover letter motivating your application, a Curriculum Vitae including a list of publications and a letter of motivation describing your research experience and interests. Please also provide contact information for two individuals willing to provide a reference letter upon request. Note that we will request such letters only for a subset of applicants after an initial selection step. Applications should be sent in a single PDF file (max. 5 pages in total) to [email protected] .
The successful applicant is offered a gross salary starting from 2000 Euros per month (1550 Euros net). Further upgrading is possible contingent upon performance.
Tartu Observatory is among the leading astronomical research institutes in North-Eastern Europe. It offers a modern and friendly work environment and conducts research in broad and active international collaboration. It currently hosts 17 staff members and 10 PhD students in astrophysics.
