Tartu Observatory, University of Tartu in Estonia invites applications for a PhD position to perform research on high resolution, spatially explicit modelling of hemiboreal forest structure, function and productivity with Earth Observation data.  The GPP/NPP distribution will be determined with a process-based model, namely the Boreal Ecosystem Productivity Simulator (BEPS; Chen et al., 1999, EM; Zhang et al., 2012, RSE). BEPS is driven by remote sensing, meteorological, and soil data with a set of biome-dependent biophysical parameters. The conducted research within this thesis will focus on parameter optimisation in BEPS and shall come up with novel approaches to derive information about forest structure from remote sensing data and incorporating it into BEPS with an overall goal to improve the GPP/NPP estimates.

The research will be conducted under the supervision of Dr. Jan Pisek at Tartu Observatory. Tartu Observatory is located in Tõravere, approximately 20 km out of Tartu. The main building of Tartu Observatory has been completely renovated in 2011–2012, providing a modern research environment.

Salary will be based on the domestic level and it includes health insurance. The position is initially for 1 year with a net salary of 1090 EUR per month. It can be extended up to 4 years assuming that the student passes the annual evaluations. The net salary might raise to 1200 EUR per month starting from the second year.

There will be financial support available for the PhD student to visit summer schools and conferences. The annual holiday is 42 days.

The successful candidate should hold a MSc. degree in remote sensing, physical geography, geoinformatics or a related field. The candidate should have a good command of English. Programming skills (C/C++, ,IDL/ENVI, Python) are highly desirable. Closing date for application is April 30, 2019. The interviews will be conducted during May 2019.
