Student jobs at DTU Aqua - Lyngby

Updated: over 2 years ago
Deadline: The position may have been removed or expired!

DTU Aqua is currently hiring students for two different positions:

1. EM Analyst: There is a growing concern over substantial bycatch of non-targeted species in gillnet fisheries in Europe, notably marine mammals, and seabirds. This has among other things, resulted in the EU adopting the “Action Plan for reducing incidental catches of seabirds in fishing gears”. To assess the magnitude and spatiotemporal distribution of bycatch in gillnet fisheries in Danish waters, DTU Aqua monitors fishing vessels using video-based electronic monitoring (EM). The recorded videos constitute a unique source of data to control and analyze the extent of inter alia seabird, porpoise, and seal bycatch in our waters.

2. Lab Assistant: DTU Aqua is responsible for the collection and analysis of samples from Danish commercial fisheries and fish from our own scientific surveys, as well as conducting scientific surveys on commercial and scientific vessels. These data are used for stock assessment and advice.

The job
Position 1: In order to complete the bycatch database, students will analyze EM data and watch the videos of the fishing activities of different commercial gillnet vessels operating around Denmark, recording relevant information in our database using specialized software.

Position 2: Furthermore, we need help in our laboratory to work up fish samples together with our regular staff and in periods, it will be possible to participate in scientific surveys on smaller commercial vessels, as well as on DTU own scientific vessels.
