Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences
University of Copenhagen
The Department of Drug Design and Pharmacology is offering a temporary postdoctoral position within in medicinal chemistry targeting disease ribosomes starting on 1 January 2020 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position is for 1 year.
The Department of Drug Design and Pharmacology delivers research and teaching within a wide range of drug-related disciplines, spanning the molecular, cellular, and pharmacological levels. The department has approximately 300 employees.
It is becoming clear that the ribosome is not a constitutive protein production machine. Rather, its activities are likely regulated by alterations in rRNA modification states and ribosomal protein composition. Furthermore, there is accumulating evidence that pools of specialized ribosomes exist in the cell. This project hypothesizes that, during disease, ribosome pools favoring the translation of mRNAs important for the disease phenotype may become over-represented. In the present project the successful applicant will develop ligands that target disease ribosomes utilizing library screening methods in combination with structure-based drug design and organic synthesis.
The research team
The successful candidate will be employed and supervised by Professor Fredrik Björkling that run medicinal chemistry research programs at the Department of Drug design and Pharmacology, University of Copenhagen.
The candidate will work in close collaboration with two collaborating research groups:
Professor Anders Lund (cancer biology) at the Biotech Research and Innovation Centre (BRIC), University of Copenhagen and Professor Henrik Nielsen (RNA enzymes) at the Department of Cellular and Molecular Medicine, University of Copenhagen.
We expect you to be a highly motivated and highly ambitious scientist with the following qualifications:
- Hold a PhD degree (or equivalent)
- Documented experience in medicinal chemistry, incl. library design and structure-based drug design using computational chemistry techniques
- Expertice in organic synthesis
- Excellent technical and collaborative skills
- Excellent English skills written and spoken
Terms of salary and employment
The employment as postdoc is a full time and fixed-term position for 1 year. Starting date is 1 January 2020 or after agreement.
Salary, pension and terms of employment will be in accordance with the agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and AC (Danish Confederation of Professional Associations).
