We are looking for a highly motivated and dynamic postdoc with interest in metabolic research and expertise in bioinformatic approaches to start October 1, 2019 or after agreement.

Background

The Center was established in 2010 through a generous, unrestricted grant from the Novo Nordisk Foundation (NNF). The vision of the Center is to strengthen interdisciplinary research that transforms our basic understanding of the mechanisms of metabolic health and disease, and to accelerate this knowledge toward new prevention and treatment strategies. The Center has around 200 employees from all over the world. Its employees moved into new laboratories, offices and meeting rooms in the Maersk Tower in summer 2017. In 2018, the Center obtained new strategic funding from NNF to further expand and establish/develop five enabling biology and technology platforms in support of the new research strategy. The position available is in the Translational Cell Metabolism Group headed by Associate Professor Camilla Schéele. The research group study human brown fat, using human in vivo and in vitro models in combination with animal models including rodent and brown bears. A major focus is secreted factors from brown fat and how these factors affect metabolism by mediating crosstalk at a cellular or tissue-level. Project Description

The candidate will be involved in several projects with the overall goal of depicting the brown fat (BAT) secretome and understanding the role of brown fat in whole body metabolism. The focus will be on BAT crosstalk with the central nervous system. Due to the on-and-off-switch in energy demands of BAT, along with the proximity to the central nervous system of residual BAT in adult humans, we hypothesize that a regulatory BAT-neuro-circuit exist in adult humans and promote energy homeostasis. Despite being less explored for an endocrine function, BAT is more vascularized and therefore more likely to mediate crosstalk with other cells and organs than white adipose tissue (WAT). With the current project, we therefore aim to investigate which factors that are secreted from active and deactivated BAT and are interacting with neurons to regulate appetite in a paracrine or endocrine fashion. To achive this, we will establish integrated analyses of the secreting tissue, BAT, and its target, hypothalamus. The candidate will interact with experimental biologists to analyze and interpret the omics data generated for the projects and provide novel systems level understanding. The omics technologies that the group currently applies include transcriptomics (RNA sequencing data), peptidomics and single cell transcriptomics.

The successful candidate will be part of a network of bioinformaticians across the Center, and will notably interact with the groups of Tune Pers, Romain Barrès, and with Atul Deshmukh, who are experts in single cell transcriptomics, epigenomics and proteomics in metabolism.

Profile

We are looking for a highly motivated and enthusiastic scientist with the following competencies and qualifications:

The ideal candidate combines:

  • A PhD degree in bioinformatics/systems biology, biomedical or natural sciences
  • Expertise in scripting in R or Python
  • Advanced skills in establishing of omics analysis pipelines and interpretation of the results.
  • Solid statistical knowledge and advanced level of using R Bioconductor packages and developing Shiny applications.
  • The capability of integrative network and systems biology analysis 
  • Familiarity with basic Machine learning techniques (preferable) 
  • An interest in interacting with experimental biologists and explaining basic bioinformatic approaches
  • Excellent English communication skills, both written and oral

Terms of employment

The postdoc position is a full-time position for 2 years. Starting date is October 1, 2019 or after agreement.

Salary, pension and terms of employment will be in accordance with the agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and AC (Danish Confederation of Professional Associations). Depending on qualifications, a supplement may be negotiated.

Non-Danish and Danish applicants may be eligible for tax reductions, if they hold a PhD degree and have not lived in Denmark the last 10 years.

The positions are covered by the “Memorandum on Job Structure for Academic Staff at the Universities” of June 28, 2013.
