Phd Scholarship in Design and Optimization of Cementitious Binders for Plug and Abandonment of Oil-wells

Updated: 26 days ago
Job Type: FullTime
Deadline: 30 May 2021

The Department of Civil Engineering invites applications for a 3-year PhD scholarship in the fields of cement chemistry and materials science, starting from August 1, 2021.

Responsibilities and qualifications
The purpose of this project is to explore key parameters that determine the durability and permeability of cement paste used as barrier material in environmental conditions of a typical offshore well, to guide decisions related to the performance of improved cementing materials used for plug and abandonment. The project will combine experimental data (mineralogy, microstructure, permeability) with multiscale modelling (durability, service life) to understand ongoing phase changes and their effect on the long-term properties of plug and abandonment materials.

The successful candidate will join an ambitious international research team with members from the Technical University of Denmark, Aarhus University, and The Danish Hydrocarbon Research and Technology Center.

Candidates must have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a master's degree in civil engineering, building physics or materials science.

Candidates with a strong background in material and deterioration modelling of cement-based materials that are no strangers to experimental work and have a basic understanding for cement chemistry will be given priority.

Candidates should be highly motivated, eager to seek and share knowledge, able to work independently in a dynamic group environment, and should be confident in both written and spoken English. The applicant should strive towards scientific excellence, be ambitious and hard working. Only applicants who seek to be among the brightest in their field and excel at the highest international level will be considered.

Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see the DTU PhD Guide .
