PhD Stipend/Intergrated PhD Stipend in Additive Manufacturing of Membranes (18-21070)

At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Department of Chemistry and Bioscience, Section of Chemistry, a PhD Stipend/Integrated PhD Stipend is available within the general study programme of Biotechnology, Chemistry and Environmental Engineering. The ordinary PhD stipend will be open for appointment from September 1, 2021 or soon hereafter. The stipend is available for 3 or 4 years depending on whether the applicant already holds a Master’s degree. Applicants who hold a Master’s degree can apply for a 3-year position and applicants who have finished 4 years of full time studies but do not hold a Master’s degree can apply for a 4 years PhD stipend (Integrated PhD stipend). The Integrated PhD stipend is only open for appointment with starting date September 1, 2021. The position is located within the Section of Chemistry with working place in Aalborg.

Job description

The PhD project will be carried out through collaboration between Aalborg University and Department of Mechanical Engineering, Technical University of Denmark (DTU), Kgs. Lyngby.

Membrane distillation and membrane crystallization are novel membrane technologies, which can recover fresh water and minerals from complex waste streams in order to approach zero-liquid discharge in industrial processes. However, no commercially available membranes for these processes are available. Therefore, this PhD project will investigate the use of additive manufacturing (3D printing) for fabrication of membranes for membrane distillation and membrane crystallization. The project will be performed in an interdisciplinary environment, utilizing the expertise and membrane equipment available at Aalborg University and the knowledge and 3D printers at DTU. The PhD student should expect regular visits and stays at DTU.

The candidate should have one of the following backgrounds: membrane technology and/or membrane synthesis. Moreover, the candidate should have an educational background within chemistry or chemical engineering. Knowledge in membrane distillation and membrane crystallization, as well as the experiences with synthesis, chemical analysis, designing and building of membrane equipment will be an advantage. It is preferred that the applicant has an aptitude for or knowledge within Additive Manufacturing/3D printing or in the field of manufacturing engineering.

The Department of Chemistry and Bioscience consists at the moment of five sections of which three are situated in Aalborg with research and teaching in Biotechnology, Applied Chemistry and Biology & Environmental Science. Moreover, one section is located in Copenhagen on Sustainable Biotechnology and one section is situated in Esbjerg on Chemical Engineering.

Based on whether the successful applicant already holds a Master’s degree he/she will receive either a regular PhD stipend (3 years) or an Integrated PhD stipend (4 years).

PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Master's degree. Integrated PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who has not yet completed a Master’s degree and who wish to begin the PhD study in connection with the Master study. Thus, a prerequisite for acceptance is that the candidate is enrolled in a relevant Master’s programme.

The integrated PhD stipend consists of two parts, A and B. During part A you are enrolled simultaneous in the Master’s programme and in the PhD programme. The stipend consists of two SU-PhD Grants per month (SU = The Danish students’ Grants and Loans Scheme). One SU-PhD grant equals DKK 6,321 (2021 level). SU-PhD Grants are paid for a maximum of two years. When the Master’s degree has been obtained, you will be employed for two years as a PhD fellow according to the present collective agreement. Part B has a maximum duration of two years.
It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Doctoral School of Engineering and Science in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 1039 of August 27, 2013 on the PhD Programme at the Universities and Certain Higher Artistic Educational Institutions. According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed regularly. It is a prerequisite for continuation of salary payment that the previous progress is approved at the time of the evaluation.

Shortlisting will be applied. This means that subsequent to the deadline for applications the head of department supported by the chair of the assessment committee will select candidates for assessment. All applicants will be informed whether they will be assessed or not.

Agreement

Appointment and salary as a PhD fellow are according to the Ministry of Finance Circular of 28 June 2019 on the Collective Agreement for Academics in Denmark, Appendix 5, regarding PhD fellows, and with the current Circular of 11 December 2019 on the employment structure at Danish universities. Allocation of SU-PhD Grants are according to the Ministerial Order on the State Educational Grant and Loan Scheme part 12, section II. This applies only to integrated PhD Stipends.
