PhD Stipend/Integrated PhD Stipend in Biosynthesis of electrolytes in oleaginous yeasts for sustainable energy storage (18-21016)

At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Department of Chemistry and Bioscience, a PhD stipend/Integrated PhD stipend is available within the PhD study programme of Biotechnology, Chemistry and Environmental Engineering. The stipend is open for appointment from 1 September 2021 or soon hereafter. The stipend is available for 3 or 4 years depending on whether the applicant already holds a Master’s degree. Applicants who hold a Master’s degree can apply for a 3 year position and applicants who has finished 4 years of full time studies but do not hold a Master’s degree can apply for a 4 years PhD stipend (Integrated PhD stipend). The Integrated PhD stipend is only open for appointment with starting date 1 September 2021. The Department consists of five sections of which three are located in Aalborg with research and teaching in Biotechnology, Chemistry, Biology and Environmental Science, one in Copenhagen on Sustainable Biotechnology and one in Esbjerg on Chemical Engineering. Place of employment of the position is Section of Chemical Engineering in Esbjerg.

Job description

In Section of Chemical Engineering a PhD stipend is available with the provisional title “Biosynthesis of electrolytes in oleaginous yeasts for sustainable energy storage”. The research project is funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation and is part of our endeavours to build a fungal battery for storing sustainable energy. Close collaboration with other partners will be an integrated part of the project.

As the title implies, the project concerns cloning and heterologous production of fungal electrolytes in oleaginous yeasts. This includes building molecular toolboxes, which will be used for cloning of the responsible genes and subsequent heterologous production.

The successful applicant must hold (or finish) a Master of Science degree (MSc) in Biotechnology or similar.

We are looking for top motivated candidates, and some practical experience with the following will be an advantage:

  • Experimental research within biotechnology and bioengineering
  • Knowledge on fungal secondary metabolites
  • Heterologous expression
Furthermore, we expect:
  • Good collaboration skills, team spirit and the ability to work independently
  • An excellent level of both spoken and written English to accommodate scientific communication and dissemination

We offer the possibility to be part of a strong, dynamic and internationally recognized multi-disciplinary research environment under the headline of chemical and bioengineering. This includes access to state-of-the-art laboratory facilities, a chance to see your research be brought into practice and freedom to develop your research project within the stated framework.

For further information about scientific aspects of the stipend, please contact Associate Professor Jens Laurids Sørensen (jls@bio.aau.dk ).

Based on whether the successful applicant already holds a Master’s degree he/she will either receive a regular PhD stipend (3 years) or an Integrated PhD stipend (4 years).

PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Master's degree. Integrated PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who has not yet completed a Master’s degree and who wish to begin the PhD study in connection with the Master study. Thus, a prerequisite for acceptance is that the candidate is enrolled in a relevant Master’s programme.

The integrated PhD stipend consists of two parts, A and B. During part A you are enrolled simultaneous in the Master’s programme and in the PhD programme. The stipend consists of two SU-PhD Grants per month (SU = The Danish students’ Grants and Loans Scheme). One SU-PhD grant equals DKK 6,321 (2021 level). SU-PhD Grants are paid for a maximum of two years. When the Master’s degree has been obtained, you will be employed for two years as a PhD fellow according to the present collective agreement. Part B has a maximum duration of two years.
It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Doctoral School of Engineering and Science in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 1039 of August 27, 2013 on the PhD Programme at the Universities and Certain Higher Artistic Educational Institutions. According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed regularly. It is a prerequisite for continuation of salary payment that the previous progress is approved at the time of the evaluation.

The qualifications of the applicant will be assessed by an assessment committee. On the basis of the recommendation of the assessment committee the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Science will make a decision for allocating the stipend.

Agreement

Allocation of SU-PhD Grants are according to the Ministerial Order on the State Educational Grant and Loan Scheme part 12, section II. This applies only to integrated PhD stipends. Appointment and salary as a PhD fellow are according to the Ministry of Finance Circular of November 10, 2015 on the Collective Agreement for Academics in Denmark, Appendix 5, regarding PhD fellows, and with the Ministry of Finance current circular on the employment structure at Danish Universities.
