At the BioMat@Copenhagen research team, located at the Technical Faculty of IT and Design, Department of Planning, an open position is available as PhD-student - in the field of " Sustainable Architecture and Construction- Innovative Materials- Biocomposites- Form finding- Product Design and Digital Fabrication ". The position will be based in Copenhagen for a duration of three years that should start from 1 October, or soon hereafter. At Department of Planning, we have about 200 employees situated at the Aalborg and Copenhagen campus. The department provides excellent research and teaching in the field of planning, technology, and society to create a more sustainable future. BioMat@Copenhagen research group (www.en.plan.aau.dk/bio-mat-cph/) is standing for: Biobased Materials and Materials Cycles in the Building Industry.


Job description

The position is affiliated with BioMat@Copenhagen research team that aims to integrate diverse sustainable solutions in the future building industry relying on circular quickly renewable and natural alternative resources with digital and IT technologies towards advanced future sustainable architecture and building construction. In this centre, diverse design philosophies to integrate materials innovatively in the design process are explored and experimented. Among the applied philosophies, the circular design philosophy ‚Materials as a Design Tool’ practicing large materials Know-How, computational design tools, form finding methodologies, digital, robotic, and additive manufacturing technologies as well as AI systems are iteratively investigated whether combined or separately to cover diverse basic and applied research questions related to the future of the building industry. Research and teaching are attached and benefiting from one another, and industrial partners are key players in this scope.

The position involves participation in current research projects in the fields of biomimetics, design, form finding, smart materials, materials development, robotic and digital fabrication technologies. The open position tasks include teaching, research work and prototyping.

Qualification Requirements

- The applicant needs an engineering degree in architecture, civil engineering or mechanical engineering (master's degree or equivalent) with the qualification to teach bachelor and master students at the university in the fields of design, form generation, new materials whether for the building industry or other related industries, intelligent and multifunctional building systems and digital fabrication techniques. 

- Very good knowledge with modelling and simulation with programs like CAD/CAM, Rhino+ grasshopper/Kangaroo/diverse plugins, and/or FEM simulation skills are required. Previous knowledge in coding/programming is needed.

- Very good English proficiency is required

PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Master's degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Technical Doctoral School of IT and Design in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 1039 of August 27, 2013 on the PhD Programme at the Universities and Certain Higher Artistic Educational Institutions. According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed at regular points in time.
Shortlisting will be applied. This means that subsequent to the deadline for applications the head of department supported by the chair of the assessment committee will select candidates for assessment. All applicants will be informed whether they will be assessed or not.

Agreement
