PhD Stipend in New morphing methods based on differential geometry (17-22062)
At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Department of Mathematical Sciences a PhD stipend is available within the doctoral programme Mathematics, Physics and Computational Science. The stipend is open for appointment from 1 October 2022 or soon thereafter. The Department of Mathematical Sciences conducts research in a wide range of mathematical disciplines and has three study programmes: mathematics (including a specialization in statistics at the master level), mathematical economics, and mathematics-technology. The department offers an international and informal working environment. The department is proud of its long tradition for good social relations and collaboration among colleagues. Employees at the department have great opportunities to shape the direction of their professional activities. For more information about the department, please see https://www.math.aau.dk/english/
Job description
The Scientific Content:
In a nutshell, the project is about developing new methods of constructing diffeomorphisms between closed two-dimensional surfaces, maps which can also be efficiently numerically implemented. The main application will be in bone morphing, where the surface of a source bone is mapped onto the surface of a target bone, in a smooth and stable manner. While the surfaces are first approximated by triangular meshes, it is desirable to develop a mesh-free morphing method whose numerical implementation should require a minimal human control and intervention.
The ideal candidate will have a solid background in differential geometry, approximation theory and numerical methods related to them.
Working and living in Aalborg and Denmark:
The city of Aalborg is lively with a wide variety of music and cultural events, top notch restaurants, fresh air and easy access to natural parks, forests, and great beaches. Aalborg Airport is well connected with the major hubs of Copenhagen Airport and Schiphol.
As employee at Aalborg University you obtain health insurance as a resident of Denmark. This also includes family members officially residing in Denmark.
Information about life in Denmark in general, health care, tax etc. can be found at the International Staff Unit page https://www.isu.aau.dk/ and https://lifeindenmark.borger.dk/
You may obtain further information from Head of Section of Mathematics, Professor Horia Cornean, E-mail: [email protected] concerning the scientific aspects of the stipend.
PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Master's degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Doctoral School of Engineering and Science in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 1039 of August 27, 2013 on the PhD Programme at the Universities and Certain Higher Artistic Educational Institutions. According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed at regular points in time.
Shortlisting will be applied. This means that subsequent to the deadline for applications the head of department supported by the chair of the assessment committee will select candidates for assessment. All applicants will be informed whether they will be assessed or not.
For further information about stipends and salary as well as practical issues concerning the application procedure contact Ms. Ruth Klitte, The Doctoral School at The Faculty of Engineering and Science, email: [email protected]

Online application - some good advice
Aalborg University uses an electronic recruitment system for receiving applications. Towards the bottom in the respective job advertisement you will find a link, which you need to use when applying for the position. Before uploading your application it is important that you have all relevant documentation ready in a Word or PDF format, as you need to upload all material at the same time. You cannot leave the application and return to it a couple of hours later without having to start over.
The system does not support ZIP or images files. Filenames can only contain numbers and letters, and each document must take up no more than 20 MB.
If you experience technical problems, we encourage you to try again. If the technical problems, contrary to expectation, cannot be solved, please contact the member of staff listed as the contact person in the job advertisement.
