PhD Stipend in Metal-Organic Framework Glass Science (18-21074)

At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Department of Chemistry and Bioscience a PhD stipend is available within the PhD programme of Biotechnology, Chemistry and Environmental Engineering. The PhD stipend will be open for appointment in the period 01.10.2021 – 30.09.2024 or soon hereafter. The position is located within the Section of Chemical Science and Engineering with working place in Aalborg.

Job description

The PhD project is funded by the Independent Research Fund Denmark (DFF) for Natural Sciences (FNU).

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are an extensive class of crystalline materials with ultrahigh porosity and enormous internal surface areas. Recently, it was found that some MOFs can be melt-quenched to glass state. Despite considerable effort, the glass formation mechanism of MOFs is far from being understood. To resolve this problem, the present PhD project will be conducted. Specifically, the PhD stipend holder will reveal the local structure (in both short- and medium range) and the cavity evolution in MOF glasses as functions of chemical composition, temperature and pressure. The results of this project will enable us to establish the criteria for predicting what kind of MOFs can be vitrified. Such criteria will be crucial for developing the theory of glass formation and phase transitions in MOFs as well as for designing new MOF glasses with various functionalities. The project will be carried out by using several advanced characterization tools.

The candidate should have one of the following backgrounds: Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Chemical Physics, Condensed Matter Science, and Materials Science. Experiences in glass science and metal-organic frameworks as well as in the analysis of glass structure will be considered as a big advantage. Excellent skills in oral and written English are required. The candidate must submit the application including CV, list of publications (if available), and official examination certificates (including academic transcripts).

You may obtain further information from Professor Yuanzheng Yue, Department of Chemistry and Bioscience, e-mail: concerning the scientific details of the stipend.

PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Master's degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Doctoral School of Engineering and Science in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 1039 of August 27, 2013 on the PhD Programme at the Universities and Certain Higher Artistic Educational Institutions. According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed at regular points in time.
Shortlisting will be applied. This means that subsequent to the deadline for applications the head of department supported by the chair of the assessment committee will select candidates for assessment. All applicants will be informed whether they will be assessed or not.
For further information about stipends and salary as well as practical issues concerning the application procedure contact Ms. Vigdis Skomager-Bohnfeldt, The Faculty of Engineering and Science, email:, phone: +45 9940 7408.
