Job description

There is emerging evidence that auditory training may improve music perception skills and enjoyment of hearing impaired individuals. Furthermore, it has been shown that auditory training can be enhanced with the addition of haptic guidance. In particular, audio-haptic devices have been used to guide the user during rhythm training.

The goal of this PhD is to develop and evaluate musical experiences enhanced by haptic feedback, targeted to hearing impaired users.

 Project activities will include:

  • Literature review regarding prior work in this field.
  • Creation of several haptic prototypes that would be suitable for music app training both wearables as well as to be embedded in a concert hall.
  • Implementation of different audio to haptic mappings.
  • Conducting studies comparing auditory-based alone and auditory-based with haptic feedback music training. The studies will investigate both basic (pitch, timbre, localization), as well as higher levels (emotional / affective reaction) music parameters,
  • Reporting the study.

The PhD student will work within a project team based at the Multisensory Experience lab and the Copenhagen Hearing and balance center at Rigshospitalet.
