At the Technical Faculty of IT and Design, Department of Planning, a PhD stipend is available within the Research Group of Geoinformatics & Earth Observation. The stipend is open for appointment from 1 April 2023 or soon hereafter. The Department of Planning conducts research and teaching within sustainability and planning, and thereby it ranges from the social science aspects like environmental management, spatial planning, energy planning, circular economy, and land management, to technical subjects such as surveying, geoinformatics, and earth observation.
Job description
The purpose of the PhD study is to carry out research in relation to the new Horizon Europe AquaINFRA project, started 1st January 2023. AquaINFRA will be led by the Research Group for Geoinformatics & Earth Observation (Department of Planning) and conducted in collaboration with a European-wide partnership of universities and research institutes. The AquaINFRA project is going to support the ongoing development of the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) as an overarching research infrastructure. The aim of the project is to develop an AquaINFRA Data Space equipped with FAIR multi-disciplinary data and services to support marine and freshwater scientists and stakeholders in restoring healthy oceans, coastal and inland waters.
The PhD research must be oriented towards one or a combination of the following: a) developing EOSC compliant spatial data infrastructures for water research, b) developing virtual research environments supporting marine and freshwater research based on earth observation techniques, c) developing tools for social-ecological models to support the protection and restoration of ocean and inland waters. When applying, please state your main interest among these topics.
The applicant is expected to have a master’s degree in geoinformatics, surveying, geography, computer science, ocean and freshwater sciences, remote sensing, or similar fields, and must have experience with programming.
The PhD student is expected to contribute to teaching topics related to geoinformatics or related studies at Department of Planning, on bachelor as well as master levels.
