PhD Stipend in Cyber Security Training Platform (8-20072)

At the Technical Faculty of IT and Design, Department of Electronic Systems, Campus Copenhagen, a PhD stipend in Cyber Security Training Platform is available within the general study programme Wireless Communications. The stipend is open for appointment from 1 January 2021, or soon hereafter.

Job description

The Haaukins training platform for cyber security is a highly automatized platform for generating virtual environments that can be used for training of students at various levels. It provides the participants easy access to a secure and closed environment for solving challenges (exercises) related to cyber security, and a place to try out the methods and techniques they learned. The platform is developed with support from the Danish Industry Foundation, in close collaboration with both companies and other educational institutions. It was demonstrated at Blackhat Europe in December 2019.

With a new grant from the Danish Industry Foundation, we are looking to further develop the platform, both on the technical side, but also with a stronger focus on user experience. In particular, we are looking to investigate the following research questions:

  • How data collected from usage of the platform can be used to improve the user and learning experience – both for the challenges and of the platform as such. This could include hint systems or other ways of supporting the user.
  • How challenges/exercises can integrate with other types of materials for a better learning experience.
  • How the scalability of the platform can be improved (e.g. by making it possible to run in a cloud environment).

Part of the PhD study will also be to continue the development of the platform, which can also open up for additional research questions which will be formulated together with the candidate.

Within the research group, you will be working closely together with other senior researchers and PhD students in the cyber security domain – some of which are working on very related projects such as the Network Analysis Platform, a platform that allows for automated generation of more complex virtual labs. The working place will be the Aalborg University campus in Copenhagen where we are currently expanding our research activities in cyber security and just opened the first and only Danish M.Sc. education in Cyber Security.

The successful candidate should have top marks, extensive knowledge of software development, knowledge of and interest in cyber security, and preferably experiences with security testing (penetration testing, Kali Linux, etc.). Applicants for the PhD position should hold a relevant Master's Degree in Engineering or Computer Science.

You may obtain further information from Associate Professor Lene Tolstrup Sørensen, Department of Electronic Systems, phone: (+45) 9940 2515, email: ls@es.aau.dk   concerning the scientific aspects of the stipend.

PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Master's degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Technical Doctoral School of IT adn Design in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 1039 of August 27, 2013 on the PhD Programme at the Universities and Certain Higher Artistic Educational Institutions. According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed every six months. It is a prerequisite for continuation of salary payment that the previous progress is approved at the time of the evaluation.
The qualifications of the applicant will be assessed by an assessment committee. On the basis of the recommendation of the assessment committee, the Dean of the Technical Faculty of IT and Design will make a decision for allocating the stipend.
