PhD Stipend in Coordinated Converter-Control and Grid-Protection for HVDC-Connected Offshore Wind Farms (14-22082)
PhD Stipend in Coordinated Converter-Control and Grid-Protection for HVDC-Connected Offshore Wind Farms (14-22082)
At the Faculty of Engineering and Science, Department of Energy, a PhD stipend is available within the general study program Energy Technology. The stipend is open for appointment from December 1st. or soon thereafter and is a fixed for 3 years. AAU Energy is an expanding department covering most fields of Energy ranging from electrical energy (Power Systems, Power Electronics, Electrical Machines to thermal energy including Energy Systems and Fluid Mechanics and Combustion but also mechatronic systems. The department has about 230 employees – out of them are more than 100 Ph.D. students. The laboratory-facilities are world-class and the research carried out are most often in collaboration with industry. The position is offered in relation to the research group "Electronic Power Grid (eGRID)" and the PhD student will be positioned to the section for Power Electronics System Integration and Materials.
Job description
The position is fully funded by the research project WinGrid, an EU-H2020 Grant under Marie Skłodowska Curie Innovative Training Networks (MSCA-ITN). The overall goal of this project is to train and launch the next generation of researchers on power system integration issues associated with the large-scale deployment of wind generation, focusing particularly on the modelling and control aspects of wind turbine and grid interface design, system stability and robust implementation. The position is offered in relation to the research program "Electronic Power Grid (eGRID)" and the PhD student will be positioned to the section for Power Electronics System Integration and Materials.
The high-voltage direct current (HVDC) interconnection and the variability of wind power, both at the individual wind farm and AC power collection grid, make large scale wind farm integration challenging. There are wide-ranging consequences for voltage and angle stability of the overall system and its fault response behavior. The traditional distinction between control and protection is largely absent in the converter-based offshore power system. This project thus aims at developing methodologies to robustly integrate the grid protection and control of wind turbines and of HVDC, under diverse fault conditions. This PhD stipend will be in collaboration with Hitachi Energy and Energinet.
Applicants must be eligible according to the ITN recruitment guidelines for Early Stage Researchers, i.e. they must have maximum 4 years research experience and have not been awarded a doctoral degree, and cannot have resided or carried out their main activity in Denmark for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to their recruitment.
Applicants should be highly motivated with the background in power and/or control engineering, modeling and control of power electronics systems. Working experiences with the grid integration of renewable energy systems will give an advantage. A high proficiency in oral and written English is required. The applications for enrolment must include the following:
- Letter of motivation.
- Diplomas confirming academic degrees (Master degree), and the academic transcripts.
- Curriculum vitae.
- Publications (if applicable).
- Project Description: the applicant must provide and upload a proper project description, which describes the applicant’s initial thoughts and ideas related to the specific project applied for. This includes a brief state-of-the-art (including short list of references), a time schedule and how the applicant intends to shed light on the project objectives. The project description should have a length of 4-5 pages.
You may obtain further information from Professor Xiongfei Wang, AAU Energy, phone: +45 21369166, email: [email protected] , concerning the scientific aspects of the stipend.
PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Master's degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Doctoral School of Engineering and Science in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 1039 of August 27, 2013 on the PhD Programme at the Universities and Certain Higher Artistic Educational Institutions. According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed at regular points in time.
Shortlisting will be applied. This means that subsequent to the deadline for applications the head of department supported by the chair of the assessment committee will select candidates for assessment. All applicants will be informed whether they will be assessed or not.
For further information about stipends and salary as well as practical issues concerning the application procedure contact Ms. Lisbeth Diinhoff, The Doctoral School at The Faculty of Engineering and Science, email: [email protected] , phone: +45 9940 9589.

Online application - some good advice
Aalborg University uses an electronic recruitment system for receiving applications. Towards the bottom in the respective job advertisement you will find a link, which you need to use when applying for the position. Before uploading your application it is important that you have all relevant documentation ready in a Word or PDF format, as you need to upload all material at the same time. You cannot leave the application and return to it a couple of hours later without having to start over.
The system does not support ZIP or images files. Filenames can only contain numbers and letters, and each document must take up no more than 20 MB.
If you experience technical problems, we encourage you to try again. If the technical problems, contrary to expectation, cannot be solved, please contact the member of staff listed as the contact person in the job advertisement.
