PhD stipend focusing on co-designing socially sustainable Danish healthcare-houses at Aalborg University, Copenhagen (20-21080)

At the Technical Faculty of IT and Design, Department of Planning at AAU Copenhagen Campus, a PhD stipend is available within the general study programme Planning and Development. The stipend is open for appointment from 1 November 2021 or soon hereafter. The Department of Planning conducts research and teaching on development and planning in a broad sense, including social science aspects as well as more technical aspects of development, and with a focus on environmental, international as well as administrative dimensions.

Job description

A close and cohesive healthcare system in Denmark has been high on the agenda in recent years. The main actors, such as the Regions, the municipalities and PLO all have a tradition of individual negotiations with the government about the distributions of funding. This has resulted in a silo-organization, in which costs and savings become focal rather than coherent healthcare treatment plans with the patient in focus. Centralization efforts involving the building of ‘Super Hospitals’ while at the same time closing the smaller local hospitals topped with short admission periods have contributed to displacement of tasks from the regions/hospitals to the municipalities, and this challenges a coherent patient treatment plan.

The establishment of numerous new community health houses holds potential to serve as a space for cohesive and secure patient pathways and ensure closeness and equality in the Danish healthcare system. This makes them interesting as design-and research objects. One can for instance ask:

• Which role can/should the healthcare house play to ensure a sustainable healthcare system?

• What are the houses to do and perform?

• How to organize the houses (both in relation to interior, functions and the citizens)

The PhD candidate are expected to contribute to unfolding and exploring this field as well as contributing in designing a sustainable Danish healthcare system that puts the patient first.

Candidates for the PhD scholarship are expected to have a relevant education with focus on sustainable design and co-design. Further, it is expected that the candidate has competences within:

• Ethnographic interviews at different sites

• Analyse gathered empirical material from a socio-technical perspective

• Co-design of systems and organizations

• Designing design game

• Designing sustainable solutions

Knowledge about the Danish healthcare section is a strength, and so are the ability to speak Danish at a proficient level, since studies are to be carried out with actors in the Danish healthcare system.

The applicant’s project description should be maximum 5 pages and consist of proposal for research question, theoretical approach, and empirical and methodological approach as well as an overall time plan. 

The applicant should be able to start the PhD project at the latest November 1, 2021. Workplace is the Copenhagen campus.

PhD stipends are allocated to individuals who hold a Master's degree. PhD stipends are normally for a period of 3 years. It is a prerequisite for allocation of the stipend that the candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at the Technical Doctoral School of IT and Design in accordance with the regulations of Ministerial Order No. 1039 of August 27, 2013 on the PhD Programme at the Universities and Certain Higher Artistic Educational Institutions. According to the Ministerial Order, the progress of the PhD student shall be assessed at regular points in time.
Shortlisting will be applied. This means that subsequent to the deadline for applications the head of department supported by the chair of the assessment committee will select candidates for assessment. All applicants will be informed whether they will be assessed or not.

Agreement

Appointment and salary as a PhD fellow are according to the Ministry of Finance Circular of 28 June 2019 on the Collective Agreement for Academics in Denmark, Appendix 5, regarding PhD fellows, and with the current Circular of 11 December 2019 on the employment structure at Danish universities.
