PhD Special Call: PhD position in Intoxication, Gender and Digital Sexualities at Centre for Alcohol and Drug Research

Aarhus BSS Graduate School, Aarhus University invites applicants for a PhD Scholarship in connection with the research project ‘Intoxicated Adolescent Relations’ at the PhD Programme Social Science and Business.

The PhD position is connected to the Centre for Alcohol and Drug Research, Department of Psychology and Behavioural Sciences at Aarhus University and is in the field of Intoxication, Gender and Digital sexualities among adolescents in Denmark. The PhD position offers the opportunity to take part in an international and engaging research environment as the position forms part of a larger research project called ‘Intoxicated Adolescent Relations’ headed by Associate Professor Margit Anne Petersen and funded by Independent Research Fund Denmark (Sapere Aude). Included in the PhD position is one semester’s research stay at University of Edinburgh, UK, as well as co-supervision by Professor Angus Bancroft, who is part of the collaborative team along with three other internationally renowned scholars: Professor Geoffrey Hunt, Associate Professor Alexandra Bogren and Senior Researcher Marianne Cense.

The candidate must begin 1 September 2023. The PhD position is for three years.

The overall research project focuses on the role alcohol and intoxication plays in adolescent social and sexual relations with a particular focus on the boundaries between consensual and non-consensual sexual encounters. The project contains two subprojects; One on policy and the parental role for which an assistant professor is being recruited, the other, the PhD position advertised here. Both the PhD student and the assistant professor will be expected to take part in joint activities and collaborative efforts connected with the overall project. The PhD project, requirements and qualifications

Through focus groups with adolescents (14-17 years old) and digital ethnography, the PhD project specifically focuses on the ways in which use of social media, ‘sexting’ and other digital encounters and activities play out in or are related to physical intoxicated settings (for example parties, social gatherings, events) and situations (for example flirting, dancing, socializing) that adolescents participate in. The data collection is to take place in Denmark, so the PhD student must be fluent in Danish.

We are looking for a candidate with a social science background (Anthropology, Sociology or related fields). Experience with qualitative methods is required and related research experience or knowledge is an advantage but not required.

At the Centre for Alcohol and Drug Research we carry out social science research in the alcohol and drug field. Our research projects concern treatment, prevention, policy, and recreational use. We conduct research in both legal and illegal drugs. The Centre is interdisciplinary, and the employees are from the fields of e.g., psychology, anthropology, law, and public health.
