DTU Nutech, the Radiation Physics Division, is seeking candidates for a PhD position to develop methods for neutronics and thermodynamic simulations of multi-fluid nuclear reactors.
The Radiation Physics Division carries out research, innovation and research-based consultancy in the fields of dosimetry, luminescence physics, and neutronics, with applications within e.g. geological and archaeological dating, radiation therapy, radiation processing, radiation protection and nuclear emergency preparedness. The division presently consists of approx. 35 people including researchers, technicians and PhD students.
Innovative nuclear fission reactors such as the Molten Salt Reactor having two or more fluids within the reactor core exhibit steady-state and dynamic behaviour that differs distinctly from single fluid nuclear reactors. In particular, multi-fluid systems may introduce strong couplings between neutronics and thermal-hydraulics effects, e.g. increased sensitivity to turbulent convection and mixing in the fluids. Detailed modelling of these mechanisms is a prerequisite for understanding the complex behaviour of multi-fluid reactors and essential for further development of new reactor concepts.
The aim of this PhD project is to formulate a simple benchmark model that captures the inherent complexity of a multi-fluid nuclear reactor core. The benchmark model should be applied in investigating different approaches towards neutronics and thermal-hydraulics modelling of coupled fluid systems, and refined methods for multi-physics simulations of coupled fluid systems should be developed.
The successful candidate is expected to have a master’s or equivalent degree in nuclear physics or nuclear engineering. Prior experience in computer modelling of radiation transport or heat flow would be an advantage.

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years. The place of work is DTU Nutech at Risø Campus in Roskilde.
