PhD scholarship in Quantum Information Processing and Coding for Quantum Communications

DTU Fotonik works with all areas of photonic engineering, including a strong focus on optical communications. We are hereby announcing a PhD in Quantum Information Processing and Coding for Quantum Communications. This project is part of the Centre of excellence Silicon Photonics for Optical Communications (SPOC) funded by the Danish National Research Foundation and established in 2015. The SPOC centre was established to aim at significantly advancing the state-of-the-art in ultra-high-capacity optical communications and this PhD project will be at the heart of this activity.

This PhD project focusses on novel coding techniques for quantum information processing and multiparty quantum communications. The science of quantum information is one of the most established in the quantum area, where practical applications as information security are already within reach. This program aims to introduce novel protocols for quantum information processing and high-dimensional multi-party quantum communications with the potential to immediately impact the development of new quantum technologies beyond the state of the art.

The project encompasses quantum communication protocols incl. Quantum Key Distribution (QKD), multiparty quantum communications and entangled based quantum protocols.

The quantum activities will be jointly with the Quantum activities in SPOC CoE. New protocols will be designed and optimized for quantum communication set-ups based on information theoretical results and analysis. For example, high-dimensional (hi-D) quantum key distribution (QKD) will be studied using novel protocols and coding for transmission and exchange of secure keys across optical fibres.

Responsibilities and qualifications
Your overall focus will be to develop and demonstrate novel coding techniques for quantum information processing and quantum communication. You will simulate the coding techniques developed and design and participate in lab-experiments demonstrating the novel techniques. You will work together with quantum scientists, integrating the novel coding techniques devised in real-time implementations in joint lab-experiments with the quantum communication activities in SPOC.

You must have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree. Good communication skills in written and spoken English are a must.

Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see the DTU PhD Guide .

The assessment of the applicants will be made by Professor Søren Forchhammer, Assistant Professor Davide Bacco, and the SPOC centre leader Professor Leif Katsuo Oxenløwe.

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
