DTU Fotonik works with all areas of photonic engineering, including a strong focus on optical communications. We are hereby announcing a PhD position within the topic of Quadrature (IQ) Modulators for integrated photonics.
This project is part of the centre of excellence Silicon Photonics for Optical Communications (SPOC) funded by the Danish National Research Foundation and established in 2015. The SPOC centre was established to aim at significantly advancing the state-of-the-art in ultra-high capacity optical communications and this PhD project will be at the heart of this activity.
Responsibilities and qualifications
For optical signal processing, electrical control of the optical signals is needed and the most general element relating to this is a broadband phase modulator. This PhD scholarship will explore wafer bonded electro-optic (EO) modulators in barium-titanate (BaTiO3), lithium-niobate (LiNbO3) to realise efficient modulators. To optimise such platforms, wafer bonding, dry etching, and design of suitable electrode structures will be challenging tasks. This project aim to combine the ?(2) functionalities of the EO modulators with the outstanding ?(3) performance already demonstrated in SPOC to complement and further enrich the optical signal processing capabilities of our integrated photonic platforms.
You must have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.
Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
