The National Food Institute (DTU Food) offers a PhD position within the field of microbiology and ecology of the intestine.
You will be part of the Research group for Gut, Microbes and Heath at DTU Food. We offer an ambitious, dynamic and sociable research environment with lots of exiting challenges and opportunities.
The position is affiliated to the project PRIMA (Personalized dietary Recommendations based on the Interaction between diet, Microbiome and Abiotic conditions in the gut) funded by the Challenge Programme under the Novo Nordic Foundation. This project is a cross-disciplinary effort involving top research environments in Denmark and Belgium. The overall aim of the project is to develop personal and improved dietary recommendations based on knowledge about the intestinal environment in a given individual.
The PhD project will focus on gut microbial metabolic responses to specific nutritional and environmental conditions. This will be investigated in pure bacterial cultures, as well as in defined mixed communities, and in a flow-based in vitro gut model system.
Qualifications
Candidates should have a master's degree in biology, bioengineering, biotechnology, engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering.
Assessment
Candidates are expected to have a solid understanding of bacterial growth physiology, metabolic pathways and/or response to environmental factors. Additionally, interest (but not necessarily experience) within intestinal microbiology and ecology will be important. You need to be ambitious, highly motivated, and capable of working independently, and to have good skills within written and spoken English.
Preference will be given to candidates with experience within one or more of the following areas:
- bacterial physiology, growth and metabolism
- bacterial responses to environmental factors
- experience with handling of both aerobic and anaerobic bacteria
- experimentation in mixed bacterial communities
- chemostat experimentation or in vitro flow-based models of bacterial communities
