Do you want to work in the field of advanced materials and be involved in a high profile research project on the forefront of science? DTU Energy invites applications for a PhD scholarship in analytical and numerical modelling of nanoscale thermoelectric transport.

Micro four-point probe (M4PP)measurements offer a unique opportunity to observe thermoelectric transport phenomena in semiconductors. We will use this opportunity to investigate length-dependent heat and charge transport.

Key problem
During thermoelectric measurements with microelectrodes, it is not possible to directly measure the nanoscale time-resolved spatial temperature distribution. Thus, we need to expand our analytical and numerical models of nanoscale heat and charge transport. This will allow us to extract key material properties from M4PP measurements with high accuracy and not just high precision.

With improved measurement accuracy we expect to detect signatures of nanoscale thermoelectric transport phenomena, which in turn will improve our models further.

Responsibilities and tasks
You will be part of the national research project “Metrology for Energy and Electronic Materials” supported by the Danish Council for Independent Research. Measurements are performed on fully automated M4PP systems, and you will take part in developing these new metrology methods to extract material properties with high precision, accuracy and spatial resolution.

You will work in close collaboration with our team to define what system/geometry/materials to model. Models could for instance include Joule heating and heat transport at a metal-semiconductor contact and size dependent heat transfer. We will also perform studies of the spatial weighting functions for individual measurement methods, to understand where in space each material property is measured.

You will be responsible for developing these models under guidance of your supervisors.

Qualifications
You should have a two-year master's degree in engineering/physics (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.

We strive towards performing exceptionally precise and accurate measurements. Thus, in order to be successful in this project, you should be strong in analytical calculations, have a solid background in solving partial differential equations and you should be a perfectionist.

Experience in one or more of the following will be an advantage:

Analytical or numerical modelling of nanoscale thermoelectric transport

Thermoelectric effects

Semiconductor device physics

QuantumATK simulation tool

Matlab programming

COMSOL Multiphysics or similar finite element method software

Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see the DTU PhD Guide.

Assessment
The assessment of the applicants will be made by Head of Section, Professor Nini Pryds and Senior Researcher Dirch Hjorth Petersen.

We offer
DTU is a leading technical university globally recognized for the excellence of its research, education, innovation and scientific advice. We offer a rewarding and challenging job in an international environment. We strive for academic excellence in an environment characterized by collegial respect and academic freedom tempered by responsibility.

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.

You can read more about career paths at DTU here.

Further information
Further information may be obtained from Senior Researcher Dirch Hjorth Petersen, email@example.com .

You can read more about DTU Energy at ">www.energy.dtu.dk/english .

Application
Please submit your online application no later than 9 August 2020 (23:59 local time). Apply at
www.career.dtu.dk

Applications must be submitted as one PDF file containing all materials to be given consideration.
