PhD Scholarship in Modeling of Near-Room Temperature Oxygen Conductors

Updated: over 2 years ago
Deadline: The position may have been removed or expired!

The Section for Atomic Scale Materials Modelling at DTU Energy is looking for an outstanding candidate for a PhD scholarship within atomic scale modelling of energy materials. The research position is part of the NEMO project “Nano-Engineered Solid State Ionic Metal Oxides for Near-Room Temperature Oxygen Conductivity” lead by Prof. Vincenzo Esposito, and funded by the Independent Research Council Denmark.

Project descriptions
The successful candidates will implement computational workflows in the framework of Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations to automate the design heterostructures composed of fast oxygen conductors and metal oxides, which can improve the current state-of-the-art of solid state ionics and can have applications in metal-air solid state batteries. Starting from DFT calculations, classical potentials and kinetic Monte Carlo methods will be used to estimate the ionic conductivity beyond the atomistic level. The project involves a strong collaboration with the group of Prof. Vincenzo Esposito (Section for Functional Oxides, DTU Energy), where the predicted heterostructures will be synthesized, characterized, and tested. The candidate will also be involved in several activities from the department regarding clean energy materials and technologies for a transition to a green future.

Qualifications
The successful candidates should have a master's degree (120 ECTS points) in physics, chemistry or engineering or possibly a degree in computer science or informatics, with an academic level equivalent to a master's degree in engineering.

A successful candidate:

  • has good communication skills in English, both written and spoken
  • is able to work independently and take responsibility for progress and quality of projects.
  • We favour candidates with experience in computational/theoretical physics, chemistry and related areas.

Approval and Enrolment for PhDs
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU. For information about the general requirements for enrolment and the general planning of the scholarship studies, please see the DTU PhD Guide.

Assessment
The assessment of the applicants will be made by: Associate Professor Ivano E. Castelli, Professor Vincenzo Esposito, and Head of Section, Professor Tejs Vegge.
