In connection with our recently granted ERC advanced grant ‘FREJA’ we are looking for a PhD student to work with new types of so-called micromotors, that are suitable for oral drug delivery and which might be loaded as cargo into larger delivery devices (such as self-unfolding foils). Micromotors are microscale devices that are made to perform different types of movement by converting energy into mechanical motion. We offer a highly creative, collaborative and ambitious work environment. This project will be part of the IDUN section, led by Prof. Anja Boisen at DTU Department of Health Technology (DTU Health Tech). IDUN is a highly cross-disciplinary research section with over 40 members, that focuses on development of micro and nanotechnology based sensors, detection systems and drug delivery devices.
Responsibilities and qualifications
The position involves designing new micromotor concepts as well as developing technologies for loading, coating and handling of the micromotors as drug carriers. You will be responsible for developing and characterizing micromotors suitable for carrying a considerable drug load and for being used as cargo in larger devices. Your role will focus on design, fabrication, characterization, and motion control of nano and micro-scale motors, possibly including material science-enabled and bioinspired motor systems etc. This work will be carried out in close collaboration with your colleagues at DTU Health Tech. You will also be engaged in in vitro and ex vivo characterization of device performance and ultimately in vivo experiments on suitable animal models. The position offers ample opportunities for professional development including participation in exciting cutting-edge science, gaining mentoring experience, and the potential for initiating new research. You are expected to have a good background in materials science. Previous working experience on micromotors and in vitro/in vivo experiments will be advantages. You are highly independent, self-motivated and enjoy collaboration in a multidisciplinary academic environment. You have the ability to drive the project, supervise students and achieve ambitious goals.
The work will be carried out within the framework of IDUN. In IDUN, our motto is ‘bringing science to life’ and we believe in openness, inclusiveness, having ambitions, making a difference and collaboration.
You will play a role in the drug delivery part of the research section, interacting with several members working in different disciplines, such as physics, biology, microfabrication, chemical engineering, pharmaceutical science and polymer science. The project is highly interdisciplinary and we expect that you enjoy teamwork and are good at coordinating your work with colleagues.
You must have a two-year master’s degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master’s degree.
Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see DTU’s rules for the PhD education .
