The Department of Mechanical Engineering (DTU Mekanik) at the Technical University of Denmark has an open PhD position focusing on Micromechanics of Ductile Fracture.

The project has a strong emphasis on solid mechanics, mainly plasticity theory, fracture mechanics and numerical modelling.

Responsibilities and tasks
This PhD project is part of a larger research project with international partners in the US that has the goal to redefine and extend the modelling basis for ductile fracture in metals, from the basic concepts to practical applications. Focus is on the fact that, today’s well known, material size effects at the micron scale are neglected from the state-of-the-art modeling techniques of ductile failure even though the underlying mechanisms unfold in the micrometer range, thus hindering quantitative modeling capabilities. The goal of the present PhD project is to develop high-fidelity micro-mechanics based models for porous materials where void size and spacing are new input variables that enable proper modeling of intrinsic size effects.

The successful applicant must demonstrate a strong background within 

  • Mechanics of Materials
  • Plasticity theory
  • Fracture Mechanics
  • Numerical modeling using the Finite Element Method
  • Programming

Qualifications
Candidates should have a master's degree in engineering or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree in engineering. Furthermore, the candidate is expected to have a strong background in solid mechanics.  

Approval and Enrolment
The scholarships for the PhD degree are subject to academic approval, and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes of DTU. The assessment of the applicants will be made by Professor Christian Niordson and Associate Professor Kim Lau Nielsen.

Salary and appointment terms
The salary and appointment terms are consistent with the current rules for PhD degree students. The period of employment is 3 years.
