PhD scholarship in Machine Learning for Multispectral Image Analysis

The Section for Visual Computing at DTU Compute invites applications for a 3-year PhD position starting early 2021. This project is concerned with deep learning for multispectral image analysis and is part of the MATRIX: Microbiome Assisted Triticum Resilience In X-dimensions, which is a project funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation that aims at understanding how the interaction between microorganisms and plants can improve food production. In this project, the task is to carry out research on multispectral images of wheat leaves for measuring microorganisms on and in the leaf. In other parts of the MATRIX project, plant genome and chemical composition is investigated, and the multispectral imaging will be related to findings from these investigations.

The PhD will be a close collaboration between the Department of Computer Science at Copenhagen University (DIKU) and DTU. The main supervisor will be at DTU and the co-supervisor at DIKU, and you will be located both places. The MATRIX team also include researchers from other departments at Copenhagen University and North Carolina State University where you will engage in collaboration by spending time in these research groups.

In the project you will employ state-of-the-art deep learning computer vision methods for feature extraction, classification, and regression analysis applied to multispectral images. Data includes multispectral images of individual leaves and drone-images at the field level. The overall aim of the project is to create predictive models to engineer the wheat phyllosphere microbiome to improve resilience and productivity.

Responsibilities and qualifications
Multispectral imaging can be used for indirectly measuring the microorganisms associated with the plant leaves. The task in this project is to investigate methods that allow measuring leaf microorganisms and assess the predictive power of these methods. It is of particular interest to investigate how early in the growth stage the presence of specific microorganisms can be detected, and how sensitive multispectral imaging combined with machine learning is for measuring this.

You will work with scientists that are specialists plant biology, genetics, plant breeding, data science and other fields, that will need the results coming out of this project. Therefore, it is important that you are interested in delivering results to other researcher’s projects, and that you are willing to work hard to achieve your goals. This will also require that you are interested in understanding details of other people’s research projects in addition to becoming a specialist in your own area.

This PhD will be enrolled in the DTU Compute’s PhD school, which is a three-year project where the primary task is research in computer vision for multispectral imaging. But the project also involves teaching, course work, and other tasks.

You must have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree. We expect that you have studied topics in computer science, mathematics, or similar including experience in image analysis, computer vision, machine learning, etc. Furthermore, the ability to program in Python, Matlab, C++, or similar is important. Also, the ability to work in a multidisciplinary environment is essential, as is a good command of the English language. 

Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see the DTU PhD Guide .

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years. Starting date is 1st July 2021 (or according to mutual agreement).
