If you are establishing your career as scientist and you are looking for the best possible foundation for fulfilling your dreams and ambitions, it is right here in front of you.
At DTU, Department of Mechanical Engineering you will break new ground at the absolute forefront of what is possible within the application of Green fuels for achieving Sustainable transports.
DTU Mechanical Engineering invites applications for a PhD scholarship in Green Fuels, Power-to-X and Sustainable Propulsion. The student will be affiliated with the Section for Thermal Energy Systems at DTU and the NTU in Singapore through joint supervision set up.
The project aims to contribute to an overall sustainability assessment framework by providing modeling capability of the impact of green fuels´ on Emissions, Safety, Performance and Cost in Ship Propulsion in various standard applications like Container, Bulk and RoRo shipping over different operating profiles.
The section of Thermal Energy Systems works in close collaboration with a number of industrial and academic international partners in the field of optimization of energy conversion systems with focus on the green transition of the energy and transport system.
Responsibilities and qualifications
Your overall focus will be to develop a modeling framework for foreseeing the impact of introducing green fuels in the maritime sector on society.
The research work includes the numerical and experimental analyses of emissions, performance, safety and cost in shipping. You will assess different operating profiles and their impact on system output parameters. If you have a passion for research and a broad mechanical engineering background, including knowledge about thermodynamics, experiments and modeling you may be the person we are looking for. You will become part of a leading international research team, and together with colleagues, you will get the opportunity to conduct groundbreaking research, ranging from detailed numerical analysis to experimental work. The results of your research will contribute to expand the use of renewable energy sources, reducing carbon dioxide emissions and mitigating climate change. You will get the chance to publish your work in top-level international scientific journals and at international conferences.
Examples of your responsibilities are the following:
- Develop a modelling framework for lifecycle emissions, efficiency, cost and risk - The model shall be based on real life data, experiments or sub-models where data is currently missing or cannot be found/produced from experiments.
- Analyse the effect of introducing different fuel alternatives in suitable applications on environment over typical usage scenarios.
- Validate your numerical models based on the real operational results from a ship owner.
- Teach and supervise BSc and MSc student projects.
You must have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.
Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see the DTU PhD Guide.
