PhD scholarship in EuroTech Alliance - Dual Circularity Modelling

A PhD student position (3 years) is available at the Section of Engineering Design and Product Development, within the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Technical University of Denmark. The position is created in connection with the project “Dual Circularity Modelling for Sustainable Industrial and Societal Goods”.

The project is supported by the EuroTech Universities Alliance, a strategic partnership of leading European universities of science and technology committed to excellence in research and education, and is running in collaboration with the Technical University of Munich (TUM). The PhD student will work closely with the consortium partners and industrial stakeholders.

Responsibilities and tasks
One of the most well-known models of the circular economy is the so-called “butterfly diagram”, depicting a series of return loops of a biological cycle on one side of the butterfly, and similar depiction of return loops of a technological cycle on the other side.

To date, however, there are very few approaches that focus on:

  • how to make the right decisions of which loop to follow, from a sustainability perspective;
  • how to actually transition between the different loops, to become more and more circular.

Furthermore, no research has been carried out regarding the transitions between a technological and a biological cycle and vice versa, beyond few high-level considerations. This PhD project will build an approach to enable the dual circularity modelling of industrial and societal goods, from the perspective of sustainability to analyse the mentioned questions.

The PhD candidate is expected to develop a framework that enables dual circularity modelling of industrial and societal goods, and consider the potential rebound effects linked with Circular Economy. Strong collaboration is expected, both with the researchers from TUM and with industrial stakeholders, for the development, validation and implementation of the proposed framework. The candidate at DTU will focus mainly on the technological cycle, whereas a “partner” PhD candidate at TUM will focus primarily on the biological cycle.

The candidate will publish his/her research results in international peer-reviewed journals and present at international conferences and seminars.

Candidates should have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.

The applicant should be highly motivated and hold a master’s degree, preferably within the areas of Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Design, Environmental Engineering, Industrial Engineering or related areas. Good command of written and spoken English is required. In addition, background knowledge on Circular Economy, plus knowledge and experience with manufacturing companies and sustainability will be weighted highly amongst candidates.

Further qualifications

  • Candidate must have knowledge of Circular Economy strategies within the techno- and biological cycles.
  • Candidate must have knowledge in at least two of the following six fields: sustainability assessment, rebound effects, system dynamics modelling, corporate sustainability, sustainable design.
  • Candidate must be in the first four years of his/her research career.
  • Excellent early achievement track record (publications, awards, conference presentations, etc.).
  • Strong work ethics and motivation to succeed within a competitive research field.
  • Team spirit and excellent collaboration skills.

Approval and Enrolment

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
