PhD scholarship in Entrepreneurship Education for Sustainable Development

DTU Entrepreneurship (Centre for Technology Entrepreneurship at the Technical University of Denmark, DTU), invites applications for a three-year PhD position in Entrepreneurship Education for Sustainable Development, starting ideally on 15 August 2021 or as soon as possible thereafter in 2021.

DTU Entrepreneurship is an enabling force for innovation and social and economic change through evidence-based research and entrepreneurial capability development across different facets of society – education, industry, government, and NGOs.

The PhD project will be part of the research area focusing on Sustainable Entrepreneurship and Innovation at DTU Entrepreneurship. The research area studies the contribution of entrepreneurship and innovation to the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), by investigating the individual, firm, industry, and regional determinants of sustainable entrepreneurship and innovation, and the regulatory stimuli for entrepreneurship and innovation to achieve the SDGs.

Particularly, this PhD project will study and develop approaches, tools and methods for entrepreneurship education promoting sustainable development. The PhD candidate will explore research questions such as (but not limited to):

  • What is the state of the art of educational approaches, tools and methods for teaching and learning entrepreneurship for sustainable development?
  • What is the relationship between entrepreneurship education for sustainable development and student entrepreneurial intentions?
  • Do sustainable entrepreneurship seminars offered to researchers increase their entrepreneurial intentions?
  • What type of educational tools (e.g., face-to-face, digital) are more likely to engage students and researchers and shape their entrepreneurial intentions?

Responsibilities and qualifications
The PhD candidate’s tasks will include theoretical and empirical research at the intersection between sustainable entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial education. The candidate is expected to contribute to the theoretical advancement of the field, carry out empirical data collection and analysis, and disseminate results in leading international journals. The PhD project thus requires a good understanding of qualitative and quantitative research methods, good communication skills, and an analytical mindset.

The PhD candidate should have a master's degree. Desirable master’s degrees include management, entrepreneurship, education, design and innovation, industrial engineering and management, and corporate sustainability, but other degrees with an academic level equivalent to a master's degree will also be taken into consideration. Fluency in English (working language) is a requirement.

In addition to the above, the following qualifications would be of great advantage:

  • Strong academic background and practical interest in sustainable entrepreneurship and entrepreneurship education
  • Excellent communication skills, both in writing and oral presentation
  • Experience with scientific writing and project coordination

Approval and Enrolment

Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.

The position will be based at DTU Entrepreneurship (Centre for Technology Entrepreneurship at the Technical University of Denmark, DTU), and physically located at DTU's main campus near the town of Lyngby, north of Copenhagen, Denmark. The PhD candidate is also expected to engage in research visits at École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) in Switzerland.
