PhD scholarship in CMOS Compatible and Ultrabroad on-chip SiC Frequency Comb (SiComb) – DTU Electro

Updated: 3 months ago

We are looking for a strongly self-motivated PhD student to contribute to a FET Open project ‘CMOS compatible and ultrabroad on-chip SiC frequency comb (SiComb)’ coordinated by Associate Professor Haiyan Ou. You will work in the wide bandgap semiconductor (WISE) photonics group led by Associate Professor Haiyan Ou. WISE photonics is a newly established group with vision to contribute to a more sustainable society leveraging the advances of new material and nanofabrication.

The goal of the SiComb project is to demonstrate an on-chip optical frequency comb and apply it to optical communication systems, after exploring and combining the very high nonlinearity and high confinement of silicon carbide waveguides and microrings with the material’s other advantages such as CMOS compatibility, high thermal conductivity and bio-compatibility. The seven partners in the project (DTU, FAU, CNRS, POLITO, MLNX, ALM, and Moverim) comprise the strongest team in Europe covering SiC material growth, device nanofabrication and optical communication application.

Responsibilities and qualifications
You will take part in the design, fabrication and characterization of silicon carbide on insulator (SiCOI) devices, in close collaboration with other consortium partners and group members working on material growth and device applications.

You are expected to

  • Design the SiCOI waveguide devices with desired dispersion and performance
  • Optimize SiCOI stack formation process to achieve low-loss devices fabrication ready stacks
  • Optimize the fabrication process to achieve low-loss waveguides and high quality factor microrings
  • Build the experimental setup to characterize the nonlinearity of SiC waveguides and microrings
  • Simulate and demonstrate frequency comb generation in SiCOI microrings
  • Interact actively with other group members and European partners

Prior research experience, documented in peer-reviewed publications, is an additional qualification, but not a requirement.

You must have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree.

Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. For information about our enrolment requirements and the general planning of the PhD study programme, please see DTU's rules for the PhD education .

Assessment
The assessment of the applicants will be made by Associate professor Haiyan Ou together with the supervisor team.
