PhD scholarship in Brain Imaging using Super Resolution Ultrasound – DTU Health Tech

A 3-year PhD scholarship is available at the Center for Fast Ultrasound Imaging (CFU), Department of Health Technology (DTU Health Tech) from June 2023 sponsored by the European Research Council (ERC) and DTU Health Tech. It is conducted in collaboration between CFU and the MEMS group at DTU Health Tech, the University of Copenhagen, and the Copenhagen University Hospital (Rigshospitalet) in the ERC Synergy Grant “3-D Super resolution Ultrasound Real time imaging of Erythrocytes” - SURE.

The SURE project develops and researches a new super resolution ultrasound imaging method capable of resolving 3-D capillary flow in the human body. The approach tracks the motion of the individual red blood cells (erythrocytes) in a three-dimensional volume for a full visualization of anatomy, flow, and perfusion. The approach can potentially yield a paradigm shift in the scientific study, diagnoses, and treatment of cancer, diabetes, and vascular diseases at the capillary level, as it enables the possibility of volumetrically visualizing capillary perfusion in real-time at frame rates above 20 Hz without injection of contrast agents.

Responsibilities and tasks
This PhD project investigates methods for brain imaging using the SURE method. Initially the method is adapted to acquire data from fixated rodent brains in 2-D and 3-D using row-column high frequency probes  in collaboration with researchers at the University of Copenhagen. The research is concentrated on studying brain activity from various activations, and the SURE method is modified to account for imaging through the skull. New imaging sequences are developed along with compensation methods for enhancing the signal quality. The method is then translated to clinical use on humans with modified row-column probes, and the method is investigated in collaboration with clinicians from  Copenhagen University Hospital

The research is conducted in a truly multi-disciplinary environment consisting of the 4 academic partners specializing in advanced ultrasound imaging, silicon CMUT probes, animal experiments, and clinical investigations, and the main purpose is to translate the SURE method from a research idea to the clinic.

Qualifications
Candidates should have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master's degree. Experience with digital signal processing is desirable. Similarly, knowledge of medical imaging and acoustics will also be beneficial.

Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programmes at DTU. Salary and appointment terms
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. The period of employment is 3 years.
